MEETING WITH NATIONAL POSTER CHILD FOR SICKLE CELL ANEMIA

From: Jim Cannon
Show
I. PURPOSE
To meet nine year old Bridgett Earby of San Francisco,
the 1976 national poster child for sickle cell anemia.
II. BACKGROUND, PARTICIPANTS & PRESS PLAN
A. Background: The National Association for Sickle Cell
Disease, Inc. (NASCD), founded in 1971, has sought
to provide leadership in the effort to heighten
public awareness of the particular impact of sickle
cell anemia and the sickle cell trait on the health,
economic, social and educational development of the
black individuals they uniquely affect and their
families. Recently, with federal support, the
Association conducted several educational workshops
throughout the country which attracted many pro-
fessional and lay participants involved in sickle
cell research and service.
The Board of Directors of NASCD has designated
September as National Sickle Cell Month, and, for
the first time, has appointed a National poster
child.
B. Participants: See attached list
C. Press Plan: White House Photographer
III. TALKING POINTS
1. I am delighted, Bridgett, to have you here at the
White House for a visit. You are honored to be the
first national poster child for sickle cell anemia.
2. I salute the Foundation and its staff for the
wonderful work they have done in the field of
sickle cell anemia.
