HOUSE REPUBLICAN POLICY COMMITTEE STATEMENT ON H.R. 3538,
PUBLIC BROADCASTING AUTHORIZATION FOR FY 74 AND 75
The House Republican Policy Committee urges the passage of
H.R. 8538, the Public Broadcasting Authorization for FY 74 and 75.
The bill authorizes $120 million for the Corporation for Public
Broadcasting for the next two fiscal years: for FY 74 $50 million plus
$5 million to match non-Federal funds received by the Corporation; for
FY 75 $60 million and up to $5 million in matching funds. It further
authorizes $25 million in FY 74 and $30 million in FY 75 for educational
broadcasting facilities. Lastly, the bill requires licensees who receive
assistance to make recordings of each broadcast of public interest available
and retain them for sixty days after airing, under conditions prescribed
by the Federal Communications Commission.
H.R. 8538 provides a funding level adequate for public broadcasting
growth. By its two year authorization it enables public broadcasting to
plan realistically for its operation and more fully to attain the objectives
Congress intended for its service to the American people.
The House Republican Policy Committee supports the passage of
H.R. 8538, the Public Broadcasting Authorization for FY 74 and 75.
