Republicans Would Rather Fight Than Switch!
Right now there is an exciting new fermentation in the Republican Party.
In the House of Representatives - within the limits of the Minerity Leader -
staff pesitions have been given to skilled and experienced researchers (such
as Dr. William Prendergast), and not merely used to reward the faithful. There
has been a reorgamization of internal machinery, with John Rhodes directing a
committee to deal with current, day-te-day legislative problems, and with
Charles Geedell directing a committee to leek at leng-range policy and ebjectives.
The latter will seen undertake a number of substantial task force studies in
such important fields as Agriculture, Congressional Referm, Economic Opportumity,
Education, and the Right to Vote.
The Republican appreach in the House will be three-prenged. One: As
the Oppesition Party we willx continue to sppese the Administration in those
areas where we believe it to be misguided in objective or mothed. Twe: In
such areas as we feel the President is cerrect, we will not hesitate to pub-
licly give our suppert, as we have already dohe on the Viet Nam struggle.
(Parenthetically, I might add that as "The Tales from the Viet Nam Woods" be-
come less meledic, more and more Republicans have backed the President, while
YORD
&
more and more Demecrats have changed their tune to negetiation and detente.
