Mirkson at 002 Fund-Raising Dinner 11/8/67.\nLadies and gentlemen:\nTenight I have the great pleasure of introducing to you a most remarkable\nindividual--s man who retired at the age of 53 and has been working twice as\nhard ever since, the man who has been my television partner on the Ev and Jerry\nShow for nearly three years and is responsible for most of its success.\nI say Everett McKinley Dirksen is a remarkable man because he...\nhas more influence with Senate Majority Leader Mike Mansfield than LBJ.\n...has more influence with LBJ than Hubert Mumphrey.\nThan\n...has more influence with Hubert Humphrey shdntthe Americans for Demoeratic Action.\n...has more influence with the ADA than the Chicago Tribune.\nhas more influence with the Chicago Tribune than Chuck Percy.\n...has more influence with Chuck Percy than the Senate barber, and\nhas more influence with the Senate barber than Bobby Kennedy.\nSpeaking of the Senste barber brings up the subject of Ev's hair, that\ntousled tangle of curls for which he is famous.\nOne day Ev walked with me into the room where we hold our joint Republican\nleadership press conferences and, lo and behold, his hair was all neatly\ncombed down with every lock in place. The sight produced outeries of surprise\nand distress among the Washington press corps. The TV people and still\nphotographers were particularly taken back.\nWhen they kidded Ev about slicking his hair down, the Senator replied,\n\"O.K., if you like, I'll rumple it up,\" which he then proceeded to do. That's\nthe elesest either of us has come to producing an international crisis in a\nmeeting with the press.\nI understand that BV got the idea of wearing his hair this way after seeing\nShirley Temple as a moppet with long curls in \"Little Colonel.\" As a matter\nof fact, when Shirley showed up at the Capitel recently, Ev stayed away from\nher because he couldn't stand the competition.\nSpeaking of moppets...and mops, I understand that Hv Dirksen is the only\nmember of Congress who isn't jealous of that over-the-forehead adornment which\nis Bobby Kennedy's trademark.\nGERALD\nLIBRARY\n\"&\"\nSerecusly, Ev Dirksen did retire more than 17 years ago. He resigned\nfrom the House of Representatives the day before has 53rd birthday after\nwinning election to the House eight times. Ev's retirement vas perhaps the\nshortest on record, for the next year he was elected to the United States Senate\nand has been serving a grateful Nation in that capacity ever since.\nnow\nAs you may know, Senator Birkson new is serving his fourth term as\nRepublican leader in the Senate.\nAll levity aside, let me tell you how important Ev Dirksen is to the Senate\nand to the people of the United States.\nOn May 10 of last year By broke his hipbens--and not only he but the\nSenate was immobilized.\nThe Senate went on a three-day week, no legislation was passed in By\nDirksen's absence. He was expected to be out about three months, but luckily\nhe came back in 15 days--on crutches.\nWhen he appeared in the Senate chamber, there was great rejeicing on both\nsides of the aisle. Assistant Minority Leader welcomed Ev back with great\njubilation, and Mike Mansfield expressed his joy at seeing Ev back.\nAs for Ev, he waved his erutches about and, borrowing & phrase from the\nBible, shouted, \"I'm going to use these like the jawbone of an ass.\"\nEvedidn't say phompho was going to slay, but he's been doing a great job\non the opposition for years.\nI give you the man who might have brought back vaudeville if he Medn't\nbeen slaying 'em on Capitol mill, that statesman extraordinary and\nstat of television and the recording studio, the honorable Everett McKinley\nDirksen.\n....\nLISTERY\nRemarks on introducing Sen.
