I AM NOT HERE AS A RECRUITING OFFICER. ALTHOUGH, AS
YOU KNOW, THERE IS A BIG TALENT SEARCH GOING ON IN
WASHINGTON.
I'M GLAD ALL OF YOU
HAVE TAKEN TIME OUT FROM
WORKING ON YOUR APPLICATIONS TO COME HERE AND LISTEN TO
ME. IT PROVES THERE'S MORE TO THIS WORLD THAN PERSONAL
AMBITION.
SERIOUSLY, I WOULD LIKE TO BEGIN BY RECOMMENDING
A CAREER IN GOVERNMENT TO YOU, AND BY POINTING OUT THAT

PRESIDENT*ELECT RICHARD M. NIXON WANTS TO BRING YOUNG
PEOPLE INTO HIS ADMINISTRATION. LET ME ADD THAT HE IS
WELCOMING DEMOCRATS AND INDEPENDENTS, AS WELL AS
REPUBLICANS, so THE FIELD IS WIDE OPEN. IF YOU'RE NOT
READY TO
MAKE YOUR MOVE YET, DON'T DESPAIR. THE
TALENT SEARCH WILL CONTINUE FOR PERHAPS FOUR YEARS...
AND, IF MR. NIXON IS LUCKY AS WELL AS SUCCESSFUL, FOR
EIGHT.
TODAY I WOULD LIKE TO TALK WITH YOU ABOUT THE NEW
NIXON ADMINISTRATION AND PROSPECTS FOR ITS PROGRAM.

THE SURPRISE
IN THE ELECTION RESULTS WASI
NOT
THAT DICK NIXON WON, BUT THAT HE CAME SO CLOSE TO
LOSING.
IT IS SAID BY MANY THAT MR. NIXON DOES NOT HAVE

admittedly ONLY A LITTLE BETTER THAN FOUR OUT OF

WINNER IN A THREE-MAN RACE WOULD GET ONLY A PLURALITY.
THERE ARE THOSE WHO WOULD CREDIT THE NIXON VICTORY TO
THE COMPLICATING PRESENCE OF GEORGE WALLACE IN THE RACE. ON
THE CONTRARY, IF THE CONTEST HAD BEEN A TWO-MAN RACE MR.
NIXON WOULD HAVE WON A MORE IMPRESSIVE VICTORY AND WOULD

THE BOMBING HALT HAD A TERRIFIC IMPACT ON THE ELECTION.
