Women's National Press Club Inaugural/7pm Tuesday Sept. 9,1969 Caucus Room, Cannon HOB MADAME PRESIDENT, MIKE, HONORED GUESTS AND WOMEN'S NATIONAL PRESS CLUB MEMBERS: IN VIEW OF THE DEATH OF SEN. DIRKSEN, I HAD SOME MISGIVINGS ABOUT TAKING PART IN THIS INAUGURAL PROGRAM. BUT THEN I REMEMBERED THAT EV DIRKSEN ALWAYS LOVED THE LADIES, AND IT SEEMED TO ME THAT HE WOULD HAVE WANTED US TO GO AHEAD AND OFFICIALLY INDUCT INTO OFFICE AT THIS TIME ONE OF THE FINEST NEWSPAPERWOMEN EVER TO COVER THE WASHINGTON SCENE. -2- AS I RECALL, EV NEVER HAD ANY TROUBLE WITH WOMEN REPORTERS, TERRIBLY INQUISITIVE THOUGH THEY ARE. I HAVE ALWAYS FELT THAT ONE REASON WOMEN REPORTERS ARE so SUCCESSFUL IS THAT THEY ARE NOT ONLY INQUISITIVE BUT INTUITIVE. YOU KNOW WHAT INTUITION IS, NO DOUBT. INTUITION IS SUSPICION IN SKIRTS. SPEAKING OF EV REMINDS ME HOW HE PINCH-HIT AS A SPEAKER ON JUST SUCH AN OCCASION AS THIS IN 1965. AS I RECALL, THEN-VICE-PRESIDENT HUBERT HUMPHREY WAS TO HAVE BEEN YOUR SPEAKER BUT LYNDON JOHNSON SENT HIM TO LONDON AS Digitized from Box D27 of The Ford Congressional Papers: Press Secretary and Speech File at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library -3- THE OFFICIAL U.S. REPRESENTATIVE AT THE FUNERAL OF WINSTON CHURCHILL. AT THE REQUEST OF YOUR WOMEN'S NATIONAL PRESS CLUB PRESIDENT, EV DIRKSEN FILLED IN FOR HUBERT AND SAVED THE DAY. as he always did. I MENTIONED THAT EV LOVED THE LADIES. I MIGHT have the ilentreal affection ADD THAT I-AM NO SLOUCH IN THAT DEPARTMENT MYSELF, ALTHOUGH I NEVER MANAGED TO GET MY PICTURE IN THE PAPERS LIKE EV PLANTING A BIG KISS ON THE NEAREST FEMALE AT SOME PARTY, BUT I DO WANT TO SAY THAT I ADMIRE YOU ALL. -4- take the opportunity MARJORIE SUGGESTED THAT MAYBE I MIGHT WANT TO POKE A LITTLE FUN AT THE PRESS TONIGHT, BUT INSTEAD I'D LIKE TO SAY A WORD OF PRAISE FOR CAREER WOMEN. I KNOW THE STAY-AT-HOME GALS SOMETIMES MAKE SNIDE REMARKS ABOUT YOU. BUT I ADMIRE CAREER WOMEN. AFTER ALL, WHAT THEY DO IS TO GO OUT AND EARN A MAN'S SALARY INSTEAD OF SITTING AT HOME AND TAKING IT AWAY FROM HIM. WITH THAT, I WILL YIELD BACK THE BALANCE OF MY TIME TO A CAREER GAL WHO I KNOW IS GOING TO MAKE A WONDERFUL LIBRARY WOMEN'S PRESS CLUB PRESIDENT. MARJORIE.
