Ford, House Republican Leader,\nSaturday night described George McGovern as \"dangerous\" and\nadded that the polls are showing him up for what he is---a\nfumbler and a bumbler.\nFord was the main speaker at the Schuylkill County Repu-\nblican Party's Annual Campaign Kick-Off Dinner at Lakewood Park\nBallroom before an audience of 1,000 at which Dr. Ivor D. Fenton,\nformer Congressman and Mahanoy City physician, was honored for\ndistinguished service to his former constitutents and the county\nGOP.\nThe Michigan Congressman charged that McGovern is dangerous\nwould\nbecause he greatly expand welfare rolls and double the taxes of\nthe average American to pay for it; beg for peace in Hanoi and make\npeace on the enemy's terms; slash defenses unilateraly and trust\nthe Soviet Union to follow suit.\nHe said that McGovern \"would cut our armed forces by 40 per\ncent without any similar force reductions by the Russians\" and\nwreck the Atlantic Alliance which would \"risk the security of every\nman, woman and child in this country. Ford Presidential Library\nGOP Kick-Off Dinner\n(2)\nTurning his attention to the McGovern campaign, Ford said\nthat to date it has been a mess of miscalculations, blunders, con-\nfusion, disorder, waffling, opportunisum and demogoguery.\n\"Is it any wonder that the polls show him lagging far behind\nPresident Nixon, 11 Ford asked, then added, \"The American people don't\nwant a man to run the country who can't even run his own campaign. \"\nThe House Minority Leader pointed out that a victory in Pennsyl-\nvania is crucial to anational victory for President Nixon on November\n7th and urged the County GOP to get its organization in high gear by\ngetting Republicans and anti-McGovern Democrats registered and to the\npolls on Election Day.\nFord noted that President Nixon badly needs a Republican Con-\ngress because the Congress he now has has made good on only 20 of the\nNixon Administrations' 62 major legislative proposals and regarded\nthis as \"a lousy track record in anybody's book. 17\nHe pointed out that America has had a Democratic Congress for\n36 out of the past 40 years and that Democrats have controlled Congress\nfor the past 18.\n\"This is the reason why we're still talking about tax reform\ninstead of doing something really meaningful about it; why there was\nno real help for the cities until Nixon beat the Democratic Congress\nover the head with his revenue-sharing proposal.\n\"No wonder we still haven't reformed the scandalous welfare\nsystem\nno wonder we still haven't reorganized the sprawling Federal\nBureaucracy\nno wonder we still haven't reformed our pension pro-\ngrams, 17 Ford declared.\n(more)\nGOP Kick-Off Dinner\n(3)\nHe urged his audience to help President Nixon lead this\nnation by electing Republican to every office in the land, from the\ncourt house to the White House.\nCongressional Candidate in the Sixth District, Gene Hubler,\nBerks County, presented Dr. Fenton with a set of cordial glasses on\na tray bearing the message, \"In grateful appreciation for distinguished\nservice. If\nHubler told the audience that Dr. Fenton's 24-year record of\nservice to his former constitutents was characterized by love of his\nfellow man.\n\"Through his eventful 24 years of service, 11 Hubler said of Dr.\nFenton, \"he served with distinction, not only as a law maker, but with\na deep, abiding interest in people and their well-being.\"\nHubler noted that Fenton's interest in flood control in Sunbury\nand the construction of the wall there was an example of his concern\nfor people and observed that this concern dramatically paid off last\nsummer when tropical storm Agnes caused extensive flooding along the\nbanks of the Susquehanna River.\n\"The flood waters at Sunbury reached within two inches of the\nDr. Fenton's flood wall, but it held and Sunbury was spared from what\ncould have been extensive damage, II Hubler said.\nIn response, Dr. Fenton touched briefly on the highlights of\nhis career in Congress from 1938 to 1962 and expressed his gratitude\nto the county GOP for the gift.\nCounty Chairman Michael Kitsock opened the speaking program by\ndescribing the county Republican Party as an organization of \"ever-\nincreasing growth, strength and genuine solidarity and predicted a\nreturn to \"our former total winning ways in November.
