April 1, 1966 Mr. Russell D. Williams Shelbyville, Indiana Dear Mr. Williams: Thank you for your recent communication endorsing my proposal that Congress investigate the rash of reported sightings of unidentified flying objects in southern Michigan and in other parts of the country. It is proper for the Federal government to look into a matter which is causing alarm to the people of our nation as these sightings have, and it is for this reason that I have called for the investigation. PHOTOCOPY FROM GERALD FORD I BRARY Such an inquiry is necessary and wholesome because of the incidents that have occurred and I assure you that I will continue to press for this investigation. I want you to know that your specific comments were helpful to me in this respect, and that your remarks do not go unheeded. I am aware of other reports such as the UFO Evidence which pose questions that, like the most recent sightings, cannot be answered by a few "pat" solutions. Kindest personal regards. The shin entre into the nort town THE PROPHECY Now I am not necessarily superstitious, but an old fortune saw in my future that I would find money in music. Now for a guy couldn't carry a tune in a bucket You can guess how I thought that ,Quite a for years back as I was driving out of a town after selling furniture stores a set.I noticed out in front of a house where put the trash for pickup, an old phonograph. Now the idea struck me might get something on old cabinet finish from this so I swung and one block and picked it up. When I got it at camp and was taking it apart, I found pushed around back beside the horh.A great big roll of bills. Now I have se in roll of bills before. It is nothing to get panicky about, but here & Grant though well represented, were just the little boys. I set whe wee hours of the morn trying to count it and as I had run fingers end toes long before that I finally gave up. Noxt day I went back to that town. By that place. I won't say 1 was looking to see if I had dropped any.I I did notice that the name 1box was Jewish. It has been evident that there are a lot of I con't know about Jews. I always say you ask a sailor about sailing. remember talking to a Jew that run a store when I was in that town I dropped in on him. I don't remember how I got the conversation started or arround temographs, but I did. He says to me, now this is what the man said. 00 I've on Maxwell St,I can well remember just about every summer The Jowish families that lived along there about all had some kind phonograph arid they would be setting out on the pourch of their up apartments. Block after block and you would hear no less than 2 or all sorts of tunes. Beek in thoes days I queried. phonograph was some sort of a and D. oil, scarce. Where did they get them -Don't come with money thought... Why of course he added, some just bought one. Others children gave the old folks one for a present. Sometimes grandfathor old uncle brought one with him when he came to live with the family. Then he got a little curious. How come you are SO interested You wouldnt like to have one of them old machines would you. I admitted that I was testing out finishes on them old type cabinete. then and there he says.I can fix you up. We got an old one up in our we been going to throw away. It has been there for years---Confederat : thought We close here at noon, you come out to the house and we got its That night at camp I rolled up my sleeves and got just a excited as I took off the front of the horn and peaked inside. Holy 4 This roll I won't eaven try to count, I decided as I took it out backed it inside of an old boot.My 7th National bank. Every time I on the furniture stores in a town and I saw an old phonograph out in somebodys trash to be hauled away, I would make a swing the block to come back by and take a look at the name on their If it was jowish I make the grab. Gotcha baby. I always thought 1f un I was going to have to learn to count. But I just stuffed it old boot and whenever I needed acquaintamce with Franklin or Grant. just reach down in my 7th Natl. Bank, I mean my old boot. That is got by all these years. Never mind about Washington or Lincoln. That to usually in my pocket. Well Sr I want to tell you that thoes old pgonographs. If thom from the right people. Sure helped me along. But in the last I have decided that there just isn't any any more. There is a that runs a clothing store not far from here. He had one setting out alloy, Now I don't want to create the impression that I am running in desperation trying to find old phonographs, Actually I was taking butcut. The clowns in that town I had heard were pretty tough. Well iracles were left here to make a way of their own and not bother the people from whence they came. The main charge on the social outcast's that they had the desires of an insect. When two bugs meet, the questio frig it or eat it. This line of thought has no place in a high intelli society. Thoes thus charged were removed. If you would doub't me watch average person today and you see what I mean. Every living thing on this planet. On the land or in the sea Had it's origin on some other planet. There are many that have passed oblivion as no part of this earth offered suitable sustainance.0 gigantic prehistoric animals came from a planet many times bigger the ours. The porportion followed as the rule in every case. Every once in a while a new bug shows up on this earth.A I bit different than any we ever had. or a new type of virus or some mal Not much thought is given where it came from, But boy we been visited left a donation. Now this atomic bomb seems to have most that are I directly connected, in a mental whirl trying to figure it out. When I To in the first years of my teens, spent my evenings in the library rea up on just about everything from the stoam engine to how to make fire crackers. I would have a streak on. For a month it would be one thing. I month something else. I think I made and tried out every type of explo from guncotton to picric acid. But the petroleum products. GaBoline and Kerosene always intrigued me. Kerosene to explode good had to be hot 8 I couldn't figure any quick way to do it. One day I read in a science magazine. About a powder the was put in a mold arround the ends of two railroad rails. When lighted melted and welded the two rails together. That was just what I neoded. welded up the ends of about 8" of pipe. Put in a long thread plug and filled it with kerssene. I made a tin jacket for the outside of this a packed in arround my first capsule the powder thermite. Arround the ou I wrapped enough fuse to let me get a good start. The whole thing was about "through and a foot long. I climbed up a hill where a caseir -uncapped--had stood idle for years. I don't know how deep it went dow I lit the fuse and dropped her in. Then got going for some distance.. Af running what seemed like an eternity it went off and took the whole S out of the hill. What I could never figure out was where all the dirt, to. When the thermite powder burned it heated the kerosene to near red The pressure must of been tremendous as the kerosene would be vaporiz The innor capsule exploded frompressure and the red hot lit the gas t minute it hit the air. There was the first atomic bomb and not by fiss which does the same thing to the kerosene. Though I imagine they have higher refined product than kerosene today. The natives always thought that some spark had ignited gas that frequently did come up out of the old caseing. I thought what did not know wouldn't hurt them. Several years ago I made up 4 of thoes things a little compact and 2 that fit nicely in my pocket. I carried them arround w1t to show to some college professor who might be able to pass on their possibilities. But as soon as I talked to one on the phone, He was eith a hurry, Left suddenly or had an attact and was taken to the hospital. finally decided they thought I did not have intelligence enough to re make anything and did not want to bother with me. Perhaps others have already written you of her. She brought movies with her of a flying saucer taken in broad daylight and showing every outside detail of the craft plus its manuevering capabilities. As it approached the ground three legs would automatically jut out from beneath it. They were always at right angles to the ground even if the craft was tipped to one side. When it moved, it darted like an insect and could reverse itself or make a right angled turn in a frac- tion of a second. Perhaps you would be most interested in her story, though. She claims to be a friend of those who operate the vehicles and to have spoken with them many times. (And, after seeing those films, I find it hard not to believe her.) They come from Mars, have a base on the far side of the Moon and look ex- actly like earthmen. They speak English or anything else they wish and are at Cape Kennedy, Houston, and all are other bases helping our scientists on our projects. They do not limit themselves to the United States but are also assembled elsewhere-- many being in Japan, for example. When asked why they do not land in some metropolitan area or on the lawn of the White House she replied that they would like to be on world-wide television SO they may be seen everywhere instantly when they greet the head of some state. (But if that can't be achieved soon, there must be some way we can get around it to their satisfaction SO that their prescence may become public knowledge and we may get to know more about them as a people. From what I can gather, though, there is nothing secre- tive about them-only the Air Force' mistaken, I hope--stubborn insestence that there would be panic in the streets if everyone knew. I think whether or not this happens depends in large part on how the news media discloses the saucers prescence. ) I would also like to recommend that you read the article by Jacques Vallee on UFO'S in the October, 1965 issue of True Magazine. I have to say I go along with the idea 100%. It appears to me that there have been in the last 20 years far PHOTOCOPY FROM GERALD FORD I BRARY too many reports of Unidentified Flying Objects, and I am refering to those more convincing reports occuring in daytime where the ob- server was relatively quite close; or simultaneous observation with abnormal interference to electronic and/or magnetic equipment; or radar observation; or the numerous photographs (which can't all be fake): I find it extremely difficult to believe that all of this is meaningless, in fact, I dispute it. Rather, I like to think that these numerous reports tend to suggest that there are actually flying craft in existence that we have no knowledge of. Does it not? We have seen "something" - we are convinced that it was not "marsh gas", "reflections of lights", "clouds", etc. A copy of our sightings is attached hereto. We have kept copies of all newspaper clippsing⁵on the rash of recent reports of sightings in Michigan, and note that many others saw the same, or similar, objects, about the same time that we saw them. Many people to whom we have talked, while not actually believing in U.F.O.'s, feel that an investigation should be made. Thank you. U.F.O Sighting reported by Mr. Dale Leegstra, 22428 St. Gertrude, St. Clair Shores, Michigan, and Mrs. Dolores M. Coyne, 31974 Williamsburg, St. Clair Shores, Michigan. March 20, 1966 At about 6:30 or 6:45 P.M. (it was still daylight), we were driving south on Harper Avenue - towards Detroit - near Fourteen Mile Road, when Mrs. Coyne sighted a long, thin, black object, trailing a black column of smoke, hanging motionless, in the western sky. She called the object to the attention of Mr. Leegstra, telling to look ht the unusual "jet". Mr. Leegstra, who is familiar with jets, remarked that it couldn't be a jet because if it were it could not hang motionless. Both watched the object until we reached the home of Mrs. Coyne. Getting out of the car, we continued to watch the object which, as far as we could determine, it had not moved, but still hung motionless, down- wards in the western sky. We stood outside for a while, watching it. There were other people in the immediate area, but no one else was looking up - all of them being engaged in playing ball, etc. Mr. Leegstra kept saying that he wished he had his telescope or binoculars so that he could get a better look at it. We watched it for about thirty minutes, it finally began to move, slowly at first and then faster, finally disappearing in the west. After it disappeared, a small, light plane appeared in the same general direction and we could easily discern its outline. We were very disappointed as we felt that we would never know if we saw a U.F.O. or not. We had heard about the sightings in the Ann Arbor area, but at the time did not believe that we had seen a U.F.O. We also noted another object to the left of the one we saw clearly; however, we could not actually see the object itself, but rather noted the black smoke which was slowly disappearing. Mr. Leegstra approximates the distance of the object which we saw at about ten miles. There were light clouds in the sky, moving slowly to the north, but the smoke trail from the U.F.O. drifted slowly in the opposite direction! March 23, 1966 On this date, at about the same time in the evening, Mrs. Coyne was looking at the large, very dark clouds in the western sky (moving north), when she saw another object exactly like the one sighted on the 20th. She telephoned Mr. Leegstra, telling him to look at it through his binoculars. Calling back, he said that he could see what appeared to be a rather dense object at the end of column of smoke, but could not get a long enough sighting to be certain - it disappeared too quickly below the clouds before he could make a determination as to what it might have looked like. You are also to be commended for your daring and courage in this matter. In their 'unholy' quest for power, the 'secret ruling party' in the Pentagon ( and that is what it appears to be ) forgets that not all the American people belong to the 'dumb masses' under their iron thumb. There are those of us who do not swallow their half truths or muddled information. HOW long SO They expect us to respect them as PHOTOCOPY FROM GERALD FORD I BRARY leaders ? Perhaps some of them have outgrown their usefullness in ser- vice to the American public a long time ago. There is more to this than just the involvement of the decent investigation of the U.F.O's. There is a Principle involved here of the governments respect for its citizens. It also infringes on the American citizens freedom of speech : Let me ask you this - What good is , freedom of speech' when a person makes a statement of some kind which he believes to be true, and government officials turn around and deliberately and publicly make a fool or a lier out of such person. By now a good many Americans realize that something smells pretty 'fishy' in the government bungling of the U.F.O. information. we are also fully aware that these 'sky objects' have been around the earth for a long time, and have even landed. contin.- Just what is the government afraid of, and why ??? Certainly not that the public will panic - We are not children ! And the excuse that the news might ruin our economy is a little farfetched also. We realize that any great change in our way of life must be taken slowly for the good of all. Or perhaps the government is afraid they might lose some of their powerfull grip on the minds of the people if we find out the whole truth of the U.F.O's. Please let our government know that they cannot fool all of the people - all of the time. We will not continue to sit back and take their 'mightier than thou' attitude for long. Dear Mr. Ford: I certainly applaud your efforts to have a congressional investigation of the so-called Flying Saucers. Since 1954 I have been trying to follow this matter. Possibly I could be classed as a "Flying Saucer Fan," but the point is that considerable evidence seems to have been obtained by a variety of sources, especially the U.S. Air Force, but this information has not been made public. Gerald Ford, Minority Leader, (R. Mich.) House of Representatives, Washington, D. C. PR6-ANSB Subject: Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Dear Sir: I have been reading articles in various newspapers concerning your interest in having an investigation by a Committee of the Congress to probe the UFO sightings in Michigan and other parts of the nation. Both my husband and myself had occasion, four years ago, of witnessing the same flying phenomena. Because it was so identical to the sightings we read of a Mrs. Baumgart, of Barrington Hills, Ill., and a Mr. Richard Rorer or Borer (Policeman) of Carpentersville, Ill., we thought we should advise you of what we saw. The follow ing is a true account: Four years ago, my husband and I were on a fishing vacation at Ox Bow Lake, near Presque Isle, Wisconcin, on the Mjchigan-Wisconsin border, in the heart of the Northern Highland State Forest. As you know, this area is densely wooded, few cottages, an extremely large lake, shaped like an Ox's bow, with 14 islands in it. We were fishing off the per, about 10:30 P.M.; it was completely dark, but the sky was very clear, which was ideal, for what we were about to witness. I was looking straight out over the expanse of water and sky, when suddenly appearing from the Southeast, inst and heading Northwest, was a very bright and large sparkling attraction, headed on a straight very speedy course. It was mid-way between the horizonn PHOTOGOPY FROM GERALD,P I BRARY and what we would call straight up, and according to our thinking, it was one or two city blocks distant from us. As soon as I saw it, I called to my husband, who looked and saw it immediately. It stayed on a straight parallel course, parallel with the suff- face of the water, never dipping or falling. We both watched it for several seconds, and then suddenly all was dark; it was dark in a flash; but did not fade out of our sight because of any distance. It was just as large and bright at the end when it suddenly was nothing as when I first sighted it. This bright flaming phenomena was very clear-cut in appearance and outline, was shaped like a football or sun-fish, was very good-sized. It was shiney bright, and gaseous phosphorescent in appearance, a beautiful blue and green, tinge of yellow, and white. It fanned out feathery, in flame-light appearance, in the shape of a football as I mgn- tioned. As we did not see an object, we feel it could have very well been the exhaust from a possible vehicle ahead of it. It is hard to come to a conclusion as to the size of this bright flame-like thing we saw, however, at the distance it appeared to be from us, as the crow flies, It could have been 30x40 ft. in size. We do not believe under any circumstances that we saw a natural phenomenon, or a meteor, or such, or that it could have been any Reflections of any sort, This was on a very well-controlled course, straight, and had all the aspects of a controlled Blying object. We have been convinced this was an Unidientified Flying Object. We would appreciate your acknowledging this letter and information sent you. If the Air Force does not know what these objects PHOTOCOPY FROM GERALD FORD I BRARY are, its policy makers may be guilty of leaving an un- informed public to react in some unfortunate way to a future event. An Air Force investigator ar shot most of them down with G a simple explanation - swamp ni gas. a But policemen, a civil defense director, a house mother and hundreds of college students had seen the mysterious lights, and it is safe to say that not all of them accepted the inves- tigator's hypothesis. The opening of the 1966 saucer season - the 20th year for "unidentified flying objects," or "UFO's" - pre- sented official Washington with a problem. Rep. Gerald R. Ford (R- - Mich), minority leader, injected a new element by calling for a "full-blown" congressional in- vestigation. Such inquiries have been proposed many times be- fore, but never by one of Ford's stature in government. Ford had just returned from Michigan. No saucers were sighted in his district and he had had no calls from constitu- ents about them. But, he said, "I can assure you there is considerable in- terest and I suspect public con- cern." Congress has been and still is reluctant to investigate. To do S0 is to encourage the idea that there is more to the UFO than mistaken sightings of nat- ural or man-made objects. To refuse to investigate opens Congress to the charge, often made by fervent saucer believ- ers, that the government knows what saucers are but is "cover- ing up." Ford suggested that the House Armed Services or the Science and Astronautics Committees investigate. A spokesman for the science committee said the number of "reliable witnesses" who had reported seeing saucers is small compared to all the people who think they have seen them. "You can't just select airline pilots and other trained observ- ers to testify," he said. "You have to take anybody who says he's seen one, and you know what that means. Since we han- dle space, we already get enough people in here who want to tell us how you can fly to the moon on a washboard or something." An Armed Services Commit- tee spokesman said he had once facetiously suggested that % the House UnAmerican Activi- ties Committee investigate saucers, since "it is un-Ameri- can to have unidentified objects flying over this country." I have an open mind on the whole mish-mash. I've never seen a UFO, but I nevertheless must scoff at the asinine and ridiculous lengths the USAF goes to in pooh, poohing the whole subject. One concludes that the USAF regards anyone who takes these things seriously, whether he be neophyte or scientific expert, as some sort of an opium addicted nut who œnjured up these visions while under the influence. And so it goes, running the full gamut of mass hypnosis and hysteria according to Blue Book. Obviously there are some nuts, jus as there are on any subject including Viet-Nam; but this is not to say that the whole subject is tainted and made suspect by the proof of a few publicity hungry idiots. I find it the epitome of ludicrous reasoning to megalomaniacally assert that nowhere in this immeasurable Universe can there be any other planetary system capable of giving birth to intelligent--perhaps superior--beings. Do they have PHOTOCOPY FROM GERALD FORD I BRARY to be bipeds or Homo sapiens? I think it apropos to say that Governments (and this includes its several arms) must always be right; they can not experiment because to do so would admit of question and doubt. The real danger as I see it (and here I can be accused of being some sort of nut) if in fact there are UFOS of extraterrestrial origin, it is unlikely that their means of locomotion is always going to prove inafallible (as witness our problems with airplanes). Assuming this, there is every reason to believe, since people fear what they do not understand, that someone is going to be trigger happy if actual contact is ever made with one of these things. What happens then? If they are ET they certainly know more than we do about sophisticated means of propulsion. They probably know far more about sophisticated weaponry. Dear Sir: I urge you to continue your efforts in behalf of a Congres- sional investigation of UFO's. I believe a public hearing in this area was needed long ago. Over the past few years there have been just too many sightings by honest and competant observers for all of these reports to be attributed to natural phenomena. PHOTOCOPY FROM GERALD FORD I BRARY Some of the explanations, such as the "swamp gas theory" offered by the Air Force, are more fantastic than sightings themselves. If the Air Force is withholding any information on UFO'sm I believe it is wrong. The public should be fully informed so as to avoid any panic if in fact the objects are extra-terrestrial. I hope that this time the UFO investigation will not be allowed to die. If there is nothing to the UFO stories, then the Air Force should have no qualms about a public investigation. Dear Mr. Ford: I heard over the radio today, and with great enthusiasm, your intention to push a full Congressional Investigation into the UFO mystery. May I be one of the first, and outside of your Congressional District, to thank you from the bottom of my heart for doing so. If there is any way I can support your cause please let me know. For several years now I have been extremely interested in the UFO mystery, and frankly Mr. Ford, my own personal belief lies in one of two catagories. First, some of the sightings tend to make me believe they are from outer space; another makes me think they are from earth itself, concocted by a group of super genius German scientists who hid in seclusion at the end of World War II, but my leaning is more to the first than the second, because I studied three books on the subject and much of it tends to lean towards linking with the Bible. This has not weakened my Christian faith in Christ or God, but rather strengthened it through the realm of reality. I do believe they are peaceful mainly because out of about 9 or 10,000 sightings they have shown no inclination to do harm, whereas on the other hand many of man's fast traveling jets have shot at them, and they have not returned the fire. I would like to point out that my own Congressman from the 6th District of Vir- PHOTOCOPY FROM GERALD FORD I BRARY ginia, namely Richard H. Poff, fully supports this investigation into UFO's as he has previously stated to me in letter form, and he is quite bitter on Air Force Secrecy of the subject. He has on occassions (I believe) tried to muster some strength on the subject but with little success, mainly due to the "hush-hush" attitude of the AF. The Government seems to put a squeeze on anything that comes up on the subject. Why, I do not know. I have in my possession a letter from my good friend Dick Poff who concurs with me that what information the Air Force holds should be broken to the public grandually to avoid a panic should one suddently land in a place such as Central Park. I truly believe Mr. Ford they are real; real as you and I, and from the three very conclusive books I've read, plus subscription to the issues of up-to-date information from NICAP there in Washington, I don't see how anyone could believe otherwise, and these silly excuses made by supposedly people in high places such as Dr. Hynek in trying to explain away the UFO's is the most absurd thing I've ever heard of. The Government and people like Dr. Hynek assume everybody's eyesight is to the point of blindness, or that such eyesight is so bad that 90% of our popula- tion have constant optical allusions and hallucinations. Frankly Mr. Ford "Swamp Gases" is the silliest one I've heard of yet. Now, I know some persons are publi- city hounds, and I go along with this, but I believe the percentage is less than 5%. My main interest in UFO's congressman is that I believe they have the answer to many of our unsolved health problems and incurable diseases. We should try in every way to make Contact with the Beings operating them. I urge you to push your efforts to the breaking point in this, and you may be assured I will assist you in any way I can. Increased Radio, TV and newspaper discussions may be the straw that broke the Damels back. May I have an answer from you on this letter. I suggest you see Dick Poff. Yours truly, Melvin V.
