Dear Mr. Ford:
Concerning the so-called blinking ball of lights. In western Nebraska in
the 20's and 30's, Jack-0-Lights or Will-O-the-Wisps were common. They would
be seen along lowlands by the river, hovering over ceméteries, several miles
from bodies of water in cornfields and by windmills. The citizenry just took
them for granted as they were quite common.
Since then, I have heard it explained as being phosphorescent gasses from de-
cayed bodies or animal depositories.
These lights were more of a phosposerent glow - a greenish due with shades of
pink and seemed to follow a car along a highway that skirted a river.
Seems the analysis by a Northwestern University astrophysicists that this is
caused by swamp gas is logical.
Please write a Mr. Ketler, editor of Benkelman Post at Benkelman, Nebraska and
I am sure there will be lots of testimonials concerning the jack-o-lites or
will-o-the-wisps in earlier Nebraska.
Thank you

Dear Representative Ford:
Please count us as a supporter of a congressional investigation
into UFO's. This phenomenom is too wide spread to be written off to
the credulity of the average person. The present investigation has
apparently led nowhere and has resulted only in making some people
appear to be liars or fools.
A national spotlight with sincere intentions could remove some
of the skepticism and emotionalism now involved in these sightings
and result in new information that has been stifled due to the present
methods used. Also, it could categorize much of the facts now avail-
able and possibly lead to a logical deduction on this phenomenom.

Dear Mr. Ford:
It is my honest opinion that a Congressional investigation
of UFO is long overdue. Let the people of America have the
true facts - both pro and con -- and then they can make up
their own minds,
The ridiculous policy of the USAF to discount the
reliability of thousands of people who have seen Unidentified
Flying Objects seems to be a discredit to that branch, my
favorite, of the Armed Forces.
PHOTOCOPY FROM GERALD FORD I BRARY
True, there are a lot of nuts running around loose,
but I don't consider myself a nut. I have been watching
man-made flying objects (and Nature's too) and my wife
has even made me see some flying saucers but the one
0 ccasion on which I was fortunate enough to see four
Unidentified Flying Objects, made me realize that there
are things flying around, not made with human hands, and
certainly not a part of nature's handiwork.
I would welcome a Congressional investigation on the
mystery of Unidentified Flying Objects.
Thank you.

Dear Mr. Bocklet:
Thank you for your recent communication endorsing my proposal that
Congress investigate the rash of reported sightings of unidentified
flying objects in southern Michigan and in other parts of the
country.
It is proper for the Federal government to look into a matter
which is causing alarm to the people of our nation as these
sightings have, and it is for this reason that I have called for
the investigation.
Such an inquiry is necessary and wholesome because of the incidents

that have occurred and I assure you that I will continue to press
for this investigation. I want you to know that your specific
comments were helpful to me in this respect, and that your remarks
do not go unheeded. I am aware of other reports such as the UFO
Evidence which pose questions that, like the most recent sightings,
cannot be answered by a few "pat" solutions.
Kindest personal regards.

The House of Representatives
Washington D.C.
Dear Congressman Ford,
We are very pleased to hear of your interest and support for U.F.O.
Hearings in Congress. We are hopeful that this may happen in the Armed Services
Committee or some other appropriate committee. We feel it is very important to
have this done.
Some weeks ago, we initiated here in Seattle, Washington a 'grass roots'
effort to have people all over the United States ask for these hearings. A copy
of a petition is enclosed. These are coming in from all parts of the U.S. and
are being mailed by many to Washington D.C. to Senators, Congressmen, Federal
Agencies, etc. These names indicate an original petition mailed to the President
of the United States at the White House.
We hope that you will take this petition up, the material in this being
most appropriate. Manyoof our people here, members of our group, etc. have seen
U.F.O.'s I have seen them personally over twenty times and I was a Major in U.S.
Army Combat Intelligence, background sheet enclosed.

Please let us know what progress is being made in these hearings and what
action might take place on our petition.
We are in complete agreement with your statement that the people having sightings:
all over for many years are entitled to action in the government. We consider state-
ments such as "Swamp Gas" and "escape mechanism" because the peoble want to see
UFO's as ludicrous and ridiculous.I have seen UFO's over the desert where there is
no swamp gas, over cities and many places, clear day time and night time sightings
with hundreds of witnesses.
We will be very pleased to hear from you.

EARTH MAN'S DILEMNA WITH SPACE
The staging is set for an Interplanetary Age to dawn upon earth man's
consciousness. Earth nations are contributing billions of dollars toward this
end from tax funds and still there is a dilomna.
We intend to establish bases upon our moon, visit, colonize, or "conquer"
Space; bring our techniques, inventions, ideas and possibly our credit systems
to bear in this planned space visitation. We hope in one breath that we may find
existing life, similar possibly to our own, and in the next breath, we are fear-
ful of what may happen if we do.
However, to the knowledge of the public at large, no earth nation has pro-
vided for this to happen in reverse, namely: visitation of others to earth!
Still, astronomers are saying that 'they expect that there we hundreds of mil-
lions of inhabited worlds and most of them may be more advanced than the earth
(Harlow Shaploy) If we expect to visit, we should expect to be visited. Ivid-
ence piles up to indicate that this is an actuality already and that this visit-
ation has been going on for a considerable number of years in time, even since
the Sanskrit language, earliost known of our languages. With each new UFO sight-
ing, the dilemna increases!
We do not have laws enacted, consequently we limit public acceptance to admit
space visitors from other realms of life. If a space visitor landed upon our
planet, we, by law, have no visa or passport to give him, no procedure by which
he may qualify to visit. As a consequence, various security regulations and laws
might bring the inevitable incarceration that no one really wants as the solution
to 'our dilemna'. If we are to establish friendly relations with other planets
and realms of life, there are some FIRST THINGS THAT TOB MUST DO
1. Eliminate the one-sided approach to space research. We must accept
PHOTOCOPY FROM GERALD FORD I BRARY
that it is a two-way affair, what we may do with or find in Space and what Space
may wish to do with us.
2. We must begin to indicate our willingness to 'listen' as well as 'do'.
3. We need to enhance the public interest by opening the doors of official
dom as regards this subject, = telling not only what our newest space
exploit or expenditure is but what is being learned through the two-way door.
4. To avoid great embarassment, even a possible catastrophe, we need to
open the doors of our minds and end the ostrich-like attitude with the reality
of space visitation already proved before our eyes. Catalogues of photos, com-
munications and other evidence grow in volume and number. The public is increas-
ingly aware and demands the 'right to know'. An explosive reaction may end the
stalemate!
5. A farmer planting a field, hoping for an abundant harvest, must first
know many conditions that apply. So it is with our Space effort. We must yield
to Wisdom, not just dollars spent. We must know by Understanding, learn and be
willing to be taught many things. This 'new field' has not been explored by
earth knowledge. Willing ones are present if we are willing to gather together
our best and wisest and plan a sensible Space Program. Willingness on our part
may bring help from those already traveling Space!
Is it worth a try? We say it is!

Dear Sir:
After learning of your call and subsequent formal request for a Con-
gressional investigation into unidentified flying objects, I wanted
to take just a moment to add my name to the growing list of people
expressing support for your action. I firmly believe that this is
a topic that deserves far more serious consideration than it has in
the past.
The attempts of the Air Force to discount the unusual reports that
it receives and purportedly investigates should be halted immediately.
PHOTOCOPY FROM GERALD FORD I BRARY
The ridicule to which the people making reliable reports are subjected
because of official Air Force attitude is deplorable. There are en-
tirely too many reports for which there are no logical answers to
allow this situation to continue any longer. The recent rash of
sightings in your home state of Michigan certainly was proof of the
inadequate manner with which the Air Force handles these reports.
In closing, I wish again to state my support and complete approval
of your call for hearings and hope that you will continue your efforts
for an investigation until you have achieved that goal.
Respectfully yours,

Dear Sir:
As a civilian UFO researcher for the past few years, I would, however,
be the first to say that it would be useless for a congressional
committee to investigate the situation if the Air Force is going to
explain away such sightings, as it did, in January of 1965 when two
objects were picked up by Navy radar operators at Patuxent Naval
Air Station, Maryland "approaching at approximately 4800 miles an
hour, making a tight turn, and disappeared" AS MALFUNCTION OF THE
RADAR
SYSTEM AND AS THEY HAVE DONE OVER AND OVER.
If they are afraid of losing face (or the public going beserk) be=
cause an unknown object flew past their defence barriers, they can
forget about it since these objects have been seen all over the
world, even behind the iron curtain.
Your suggestion that a panel of scientists be appointed to reexamine
all recent data about UFO is certainly a better one but if they
are going to relate what might be unprecedented with the known
where will that get us. Such as the UFO being called lights rather
than consider they might, be ships enveloped in an artificial electric
forcefield or atmosphere, making them immune to pressures of our

atmosphere or pull of our gravity, which cannot be photographed
through unless decelerated. and of course, turned off, when the
ship has landed and any people emerge the lights running up color
spectrum as degree of power is applied.
I have my own proof as to the existence of more advanced, friendly
human beings in our atmosphere, apparently only observing us but
that would be proof only to someone who cared to sincerely consider
its possibilities.
I have only one question to ask: what if these object flyin into our
atmosphere in such quantities that no one can deny them; to whom would
the public turn? And those of us who have been doing this research
for some time have noted the increase (outside of psychological in=
fluence).

PLEASE NOTE
STATEMENT BY HOUSE MINORITY LEADER GERALD R. FORD, R-MICHIGAN
DATE
As I had expected, some persons have ridiculed my call for a congressional
investigation of unidentified flying objects (UFO's). These people are a
fraction of those who have given me their reaction to my proposal. The
overwhelming majority of those expressing a view in letters to me believe
a congressional investigation would be useful and is needed.
Those who scoff at the idea of a congressional investigation of UFO's
apparently are unaware that the House Armed Services Committee has scheduled
a closed-door hearing on the matter Tuesday with the Air Force and that
Rep. Joseph E. Karth, D-Minn., headed a three-man subcommittee which held
two days of hush-hush hearings five years ago on behalf of the House Science
and Astronautics Committee. Karth has confirmed in conversation with a
member of my staff that he conducted these secret hearings.
The present Science and Astronautics Committee chairman, Rep. George P.
Miller, D-Calif., has shied away from a UFO probe at this time, saying his
committee does not have jurisdiction over the Air Force. But the late
Rep. Overton Brooks, D-La., obviously had different ideas because he tapped
Karth to summon Air Force witnesses and question them after a flurry of UFO
sightings in 1961.
Karth has informed me that his subcommittee made an oral report to the
full committee but never released anything to the public. According to
Charles F. Ducander, the committee's staff director, no record was made of
conversation between Karth subcommittee members and Air Force witnesses.
The hearings, he said, took place in Karth's congressional office.
I have never said that I believe any of the reported UFO sightings;
indicate visits to earth from another planet. Apart from pranks and natural
phenomena, some of these objects may well be products of experimentation by
our own military. If this is so, why doesn't the Air Force concede it and
in this way reassure the American people? There would be no need to go into
detail on the nature of the experiments.

Dear Mr. Ford:
I'm pleased to know you are asking for an investigation of UFO
phenomena. An examination of this subject is long overdue. The
nation is entitled to an explanation beyond that which it is receiving
from the Air Force. On the basis of my own experience, I am satisfied

there are objects in the sky for which there is no conventional
explanation. I hope your efforts to get an investigation are successful.
I'm sure an objective examination of all the facts would prove to be
most enlightening.
Undoubtedly, many of the reports about UFOs are nonsense. Every
kook and nut in the country seems to have gotten into the act. But the
fact remains, however, that an impressive number of UFO sightings would
appear to be valid.
Thanks for giving this note your attention, and good luck.

Representative Ford:
Hurrah, at last we have a man who is unafraid of public
ridicule. I firmly agree with your beliefs and whole-
heartedly endorse the proposal for a complete congress-
ional investigation of UFOs. If the device or weapon is
ours, let the public know; we pay our taxes and we have
the right to know!
Overly exaggerated devices (ea., Orson Welles' "Invasion
from Mars") may upset our national balance, but the "truth"
should always be told. We didn't get to be the great nation
we are by closing our eyes and hoping that ill times would
pass. This fact is proven every day with life constantly
going on even though, the threat of the hydrogen-bomb and
the killing of our men in Vietnam sits over our heads. We

suffered reversals from ignorance, but we gained immensely
from our errors. If we are to ever gain peace and pros-
perity, we must question that which is improbable and con-
quer that which is impossible.
I mean to strike no blow at our United States Air Force,
but I refuse to be led like a lamb to uncertainty. I hope
that my voice and pen may partially open the eyes of the
doubters, the minds of the untrustful and the hearts of the
intolerant. To move forward we must explore, analyze, deter-
mine and classify all the facts, else we are lost.

Dear Sir:
I am writing to you in regard to a possible Congressional
investigation into the flying saucer or UFO mystery. Since
getting interested in this subject several years ago, by
way of one of my science students, I have read many books
on the subject, listened to a good many records and tape
recordings, viewed many pictures and filmstrips, and talked
with a number of people in this country and in Europe who
are presently engaged in the study and investigation of this
phenomenon. From all of this I have come to a number of what
I consider relevant, sound conclusions. For one thing, I
am convinced that the phenomenon is indead real and I suspect
that a good deal of information dealing with it is being
withheld from the public.

Smith, and many others seem quite rational, convincing and
also highly readable. If there is an investigation, I would
suggest that at least Dr. Daniel W. Fry of Merlin, Oregon
and Mr. C.A. Honey of 1231 East Belmont Ave., Anaheim, Calif.
be asked to present their evidence and views on the subject.
Mr. Honey is a highly qualified engineer, presently working
on the NASA Moon Surveyer project at Hughes Aircraft. His
S.P. NEWSLETTER has done much towards enlightening the public
on the reality of these space craft visitations, where they
operate from, and the reason for their coming. I have heard
Dr. Fry lecture on three separate occasions, once at the
junior high school where I teach science. On all occasions,
I have found high highly intelligent, convincing, and a man
of exceptional character.
I am enclosing a booklet sent to me from Japan, along
with a picture from AFSCA. There are many such pictures,
some of which have found their way into this weeks issue of
LIFE magazine. Mr. George Adamski's pictures are also very
convincing to me.
The leading astronomers and scientists should be asked
about the Gassendi Crater of the moon. I have a picture
claimed to have been taken of this crater which shows what
looks like some kind of a base there. Another picture,
supposedly taken by the Russians, shows a large, dome shaped
structure on the back side of the moon. It appears to be
at least a 100 miles in diameter.
If any man have ears, let him hear"

Dear Mr. Ford:
I am glad to note that you are concerned about
the Air Force "investigation" of U.F.O. sightings. PLEASE
follow up with continued action.
It is a sad thing to see the disintegration of
public respect for our Air Force because of the pig-headed
way these A.F. people go about the business of questioning
(or ignoring) witnesses who command more respect than they
get from U.S. Government agencies. Who do they (the Air
Force people) think they are working for, anyway? The big
mystery, to most of us, the general public, is: WHAT ARE
THEY TRYING TO DISPROVE, AND WHY?
Thus far, so far as the public has been allowed to
PHOTOCOPY FROM GERALD FORD I IBRARY
see, these Air Force "investigations" have amounted to
little but bald attempts to discredit sightings, no matter
how able or credible the sightings have been, and no matter
how reputable the witnesses. My own sense of decency and
fairness has been violated just about every time a "flap"
occurs, and along with most of the folks I know I find
myself becoming disgusted with pretenses on the part of
U.S. Government representatives, when something far better
than pretense is called for. We have a right to knowledge,
and if knowledge cannot be arrived at, we have full right
to know whatever an investigation can discover, without any
quibbling or cover-up.
PLEASE insist upon an open, unbiased inquiry!
Respectfully,
