Ford House Republican Leader Washington, D. C. Dear Sir: Erasable This is in full support of your efforts to have a congres- sional investigation of UFO reports, and I agree also that "the American public deserves a better explaination than that thus far given by the Air Force." I have never seen any of the reported objects, nor am I sure one eay or another as to their existence, However, there are ap- parently many reliable Americans who have seen strange phenomena and should not be held up to ridicule for reporting on what may turn out to be their patriotic duty. PHOTOCOPY FROM GERALD FORD I BRARY It is altogether possible that some of the best evidence re- mains hidden because most people would not want to face the doubt and suspicions of others. I believe, therefore, that a congress- ional investigation is advisable and even necessary --- perhaps to encourage some very reliable people to give facts which cannot be disputed. Dear Congressman Ford: You are to be congratulated for your courageous stand in support of an open Congressional inquiry into the entire UFO subject. I agree with you that the Air Force handling of the subject should be investigated once and for all. I note, however, that the House Armed Services Committee will ask the Air Force questions only regarding recent UFO sightings. Also, I have not heard about any other people appearing before the Committee other than the Air Force. Dear Sir: It pleases me to read you may bring about a. public hearing on Unidentified Flying Objects. Ever since Kenneth Arnold, now a Boise, Idaho business man, on June 24, 1947, on S flight from the coast to Yakima, saw nine saucer like things in the vicinity of Mount Rainier, maneuvering in a manner impossible for conventional aircraft we have intermittently heard of such sightings around the world. What Arnold saw was not "swamp mist." We have heard of many mysterious accidents in the air that could not be explained. I wish here to tell of one that makes me think of UFOs. On June 3, 1963, a Douglas DC-7C went down X in Alaskan waters with the loss of all aboard, 101 PHOTOCOPY FROM GERALD FORD I IBRARY people. The short news item of that day and the following day indicated it had hit something with terrific impact. There were no other craft in the air. The "Aircraft Accident Report" by the Civil Aeronautics Board, released on April 21, 1964, closes it's report with this paragraph: "Because of a lack of evidence the Board is unable to determine the probable cause of this accident." Yours truly, Albert Lund. CC to Maj. Donald E Keyhoe, Director The National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena (NICAP) 1536 Connecticut Avenue, N. W. Washington, D. C. Incidentally, I am a retired private accountant and elderly. VFO 4 April 1966 Hon. Gerald Ford House Republican Leader Washington, D.C. APR5- ANSO Dear Sir:- Please accept my hearty congratulations! on your daring and valiant position in the field of Unidentified Flying Objects. This in the face of positions taken by Dr. Donald Menzel and Dr. H. Allen Hynek of Harvard and Northwestern University respectively, both of whom have seemingly taken a negative stand. To my mind the advice of a pioneer like Major Donald Keyhoe is much more in keeping with the truth. Press releases by Major Donald Keyhoe claim a preponderance of documentary evidence in support of the existence of Unidentified Flying Objects. Kind sir, your speaking out in favor of a full blown congressional investigation of the UFOs is commendable and overdue. This is an action that many people over the entire nation have been yearning for many years, and since you have taken this bold stand I for one, and I know others, will come forward at any time and testify what our amazed eyes beheld; temperature inversions, swamp gas, high flying geese notwithstanding. I would be anxious and W illing to submit to a lie detector test, truth serum, psychiatric creening or anything else the masters of science may conjure up. = Indeed, whether or not a belated congressional investigation materializes or not ian't going to prevent super scientists of distant worlds from accomplishing PHOTOCOPY FROM GERALD FORD I BRARY their mission - their work goes on daily under t he very noses of those who deny their existence. Isn't it paradoxical that private citizens should be more informed in this area than the Government, or at least more than the Government is willing to release to the public. Yours sincerely, Walter Rossit #2 Castillo Street San Francisco, Calif. UFO 100 Second Street Athens, Ohio APR5 ANSTO April 2, 1966 Congressman Gerald Ford Congressional Office Building Washington, D.C. Dear Congressman Ford: I would like to applaud your bold stand on what is certainly a political hot potato: Congressional hearings into the UFO situation. With the recent rash of UFO sightings across the country, I think that a large section of the American public has now come to realize that they are not being told all the facts of the UFO phenomena. Whether this is because of an incompetent investigation, as apparently many Michigan residents feel, or, as others claim, & deliberate Air Force policy, the result is the same-the public is on the long end of the observations, but the short end of the explanations. No one, for instance, could read the statements by numerous law enforcement officials in the Ann Arbor area with an open mind, and still come up with an 'explanation' of "swamp gas". (That Dr. Hynek could, and then announce it to the world with a straight face, perhaps says more for his abilities as an actor than as a scientist.) As these sightings by law enforcement agencies continue, the public is being forced to the conclusion that either the Air Force is wrong, or police officials across the nation are no longer competent observers. This is not a decision which a properly informed American public would have to PHOTOCOPY FROM GERALD FORD I BRARY make. T am enclosing a. clipping from the Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch which I think may shed some light on the status of the Air Force investigation, as I imagine that the scene at Lockbourne AFB was repeated at bases everywhere. (And from my own military experience, I can just about visualize the man who gets picked as "UFO Information Officer" My feeling is that since the Air Force has insisted for 18 years that UFOs pose no security threat to the country, the investigation should be taken out of the hands of the military and given to a public, civilian panel of scientists, It could be under Federal sponsorship if necessary, but I think private organizations, such as the Ford Foundation, should be encouraged to underwrite at least part of the cost. This would do a great deal to restore public confidence in the information they receive, as well as encourage many citizens to report sightings which they are now witholding for fear of ridicule. (A state highway patrolman, explaining why they had not reported a sighting over Athens last week to the Air Force, told me, "Why should we? They would just come over and say we were stupid." This whole situation seems strangely reminiscent of the situation in South Viet Nam a couple of years ago, when rumors began to circulate that those old WW II B-25s were not quite up to the situation. Mr. McNamara and the Air Force proclaimed far and wide that "our equipment is more than adequate". .and then pilots began writing home and saying the wings were falling off. It took the threat of Congressional hearings to get that mess straightened out, too. Thank you. Sincerely, I. Kirkland, Wash. 98033 March 28, 1966 The Honorable Gerald R. Ford U. S. House of Representatives Washington, D. C. 20515 APR5-ANSO Dear Mr. Ford: I agree with you that there should be a Congressional investigation of UFOs. I hope it will be thorough and that the results will be given to the public. We ordinary people are tired of secrecy in government. Secrecy and deceit in foreign affairs are being accepted because we are in war. But we are not at war with UFOs (or are we?) so I think the information the govern- ment has on them should be released. I don't think it would cause panic. I have never seen one, but I think there is enough evidence of their existence to take them seriously. I am most concerned that on several occasions when persons carrying guns saw, or believed they saw, a UFO, they fired at it, although it had not shown any hostile action. These men said they fired instinctively. I believe that PHOTOCOPY FROM GERALD FORD I BRARY Congress should pass a law against individuals' killing or attempting to kill any non-belligerent creature in or from a UFO. I reason that if the UFOs are from space, they are operated by creatures at least as intelligent as we, and certainly more scientifically advanced in at least one field. Aside from the moral issue, for us to attack such creatures might, at the worst, bring dis- astrous retaliation against us, and if not that, might destroy an opportunity for us to learn from them things that might be of great value. And now the reports are spreading to all parts of the country. Let me tell you that more people than I ever thought are very concerned about UFOs. A few years ago many of these people would have read the reports and laughted, thinking of it as mere science fiction. But now they are taking this very seriously. And a great many of them think that the Air Force is with holding UFO information and on the whole is doing a lousy job investigating UFOs. I have written to Rep. I trust you will continue pressing for hearing & inves- tigation. Past disregard for the matter is a disgrace and so called "explanations" by A.F. & other "authorities", exclusive of NICAP, have been and are, an insult to intelligence. No wonder there is wide spread & increasing lack of confidence in government. Much more is to be feared from it than from the "flying saucers" themselves. In so far as I have been able to determine as the result of 15 yrs research into the matter, there is little if any cause of fear from the UFO's. I, like many others, do not speak from "hear say". I too am a member PHOTOCOPY FROM GERALD FORD I BRARY of NICAP and in addition to same, I have had more than one sighting, each unmistakable in identity and beyond any possibility of fitting the framework of "natural phenomena" as we presently know it. I have had both daylight & night sightings. My first occured at Lansing Mich in 1913, believe it or not. Admittedly I was young at the time but it was unmistakable and before aircraft etc cluttered up the heavens. Time, about 9 PM, midsummer, sunset, cloudless sky, direction of travel, slightly north of eastward, speed much faster than any known vehicle of that day & age, probably 200 to 300 mph, appearance-- shiney & probably metalic of flattened spherical configeration, sound, - none, angle with horizon, about 15 to 20 degrees with horizon, probable distance away, not more than 4000 ft, elevation probably 1500 ft above ground. Plenty of witnesses including my parents observed it. Explan- ation, none. Definately however, it was no balbonn, meteor, plane or temperature inversion. So much for my first. Second sighting took place in 1952. In the presence of 5 others and about 10:30 PM, while on witnesses front lawn, a group of 7 lighted objects were observed NW of us rapidly approaching and traveling in south-southeasterly direction at roughly 1000 to 2000 mph without sound. When due west of us, angle with horizon was approximately 20 degrees so they were roughly perhaps 1500 to 2000 ft above Denver. Sky was pretty much cloudless and ther was no appreciable wind. Against the night sky no details were discernable of course, they were merely "lighted objects" and spread out for perhaps a mile. Hundreds observed same and according to Denver Post of the following morning, sightings occured variously between Laramie Wyo. and Trinadad Colo. Post estim- a ated ave. speed at 9000 mph. Public explanation, a meteor. Hooey! The foregoing, Mr Ford, is characteristic of many of UFO sightings. Sure, some are not as clean cut & definate or by trained observers. As a Prof. Engineer, I deal with distance judgements every day. Also Engineers are not overly gullible or prone to jump to rediculous conclusions. I know whereof I speak, ridicule not withstanding. The "saucers are real". Admittedly however, they sometimes behave in an "Unreal manner". They definately are not of our civilization. They deserve a concientious & unprejudiced study on a world wide basis. We of NICAP as well as other similarly interested organizations with more than a million members have butted our heads against the stone wall long enough. It is high time someone like yourself enters the picture fully aware of the implications. You will receive aid and will be doing perhaps a greater service to your country than you presently realize. It is high time that the government, and the human race in general, cease disregarding & ridiculing that which eludes their understanding. More power to you. Sincerely Lingd Grold Lloyd L. Gerald Ford Lansing, Michigan Dear Sir: After reading several newspaper accounts of the UFO sightings in Michigan, I thought I should write to you and encourage your efforts that such objects should be investigated (since I am a former Michigander). The San Diego Union reported last week that Air Force investigators were willing to settle for the solution that such UFO sightings (witnessed by dozens of persons) were PHOTOCOPY FROM GERALD FORD I BRARY nothing more than swamp gases. How ridiculous! I lived in Michigan for 20 years in a rural area near many swamps and never once did I see swamp gases glowing or think that swamp gases reminded me of UFO's. I, too, have sighted a UFO. In September of 1961 I sighted an immense UFO shaped like a boomerang with various undulating lights on its bottom. This object flew directly over San Diego about 9:00 p.m. A complete record of this sighting has been filed with NICAP in Washington, D.C. Please continue to urge the investigation of UFO's! Do not be discouraged by skeptical or ignorant people who refuse to recognize a fact even when it is plainly visible. Do not accept the blind explanations of our Air Force either. About four years ago I wrote to the USAF and gave them my opinion of their UFO explanations. In return I received a five-page news release denying the existence of UFO's. However, the last line of that news release read "If you should see a UFO, please report it to your nearest Air Force office as soon as possible". Thank you for your persistence and pluck. I am not so much concerned about UFO's as I am over governmental attitudes. Personally, I feel I am out of the primitive class and do not need a Great White Father to rock me to sleep with silly lullabies. It is distressing to me that I do not believe one single word the Air Force and/or the government has to say on the subject of UFO/s. It seems to me they presume the citizenry will swallow anything. Bessor 7-B 6349 Walnut Street Fitt sburgh 6, Penn'a March the 27th, 1966 Respected Sir :- Let, me heartily compliment you on your expressing a desire that the entire UFO matter be subject to a congressional investigation! I admire intelligence and iniative in our congressman! This investigation of Air Force suppression should have been effected away back in 1949, when secrecy went into effect. I note that N.I.C.A.P., of Washington, has, for a year or more, tried to interest congress in an investigation. This group is a very sensible and sane lot of dedicated researchers, and they have "the facts". I have been a researcher of aerial phenomena since June of 1947, after Ken Arnold first described the objects he saw as "saucer-shaped", and "weaving" over the mountain tops. PHOTOCOPY FROM GERALD FORD |BRARY Having studied paranormal phenomena for 10 years previous to his sighting, I realized a similarity of the "weaving" to a description of a poltergeist-propelled piece of wood in a carpenter's shop, which "zig-zagged" in flight, a phenomenon which occurred some years ago. Further, I noted the SIMILARITY of the UFO luminosities to the appearances of phant oms in (proven) haunted houses. I put two and two together, and wrote Wright Air Force Base that it was my BELIEF the "flying discs" represented various forms of extra-terrestrial (perhaps ionospheric) ectoplasmic-snimal life, possibly forced to seek more dense atmos- pheres during (roughly) 30 year periods of climatic disturbances ( freak weather, etc.) these periods being, roughly, 40 years apart. You see, the 1870s, '80s and 190s saw a good number of sky phenomena and "record-breaking" weather! Harry H. Haberer, Radio and Press Section, Wright Air Force B ase, wrote me that my theory concerning the flying discs "is one of the most intelligent we have received." In a press release, in 1949, the Air Force stated he saucers act more like animals than anything else." The Saturday Evening Post, May (or June) 1949, carried my "ghost-animal" theory and also Life magazine, April or May 1952, in its letters column. When humanoids are "observed" in or near "saucers", I rather suspect the witness SAW an object and just "added" the men to embroider it, Because the Air Force refused to admit the reality of UFOs, the opportunists got in on the act ( Adamski, Frye, Bethurum, Angelucci, Desmond Leslie, etc) ) and made saucer hay. The poor public was being HOAXED by the pranksters on one side and the Air Force on the other. Nor is this the only time the government had deliberately hoaxed the public! It, took10 years and the heat of a presidential election to apprise the tax-paying public of the term "strontium-90". Bless Adlai's heart! A congressional hearing drew out the term "easium" - 2 - in 1957, and it was not till 1960 we got from the very reluctant A.E.C. the term "radio- active iodine"! So there are certain government agencies which are tight little isles unto themselves and "the public be dammed!" When there was rash of sightings over Washington, D.C. in 1951 or '52, right away quick, the Air Force "shot them down" by calling in Donald Menzel, Harvard "astrophysicist", who at once 'explained" them all away as "temperature inversions" Don Menzel is one of those men who simply REFUSES to admit the possibility of "flying saucers". He suffers from what I call "professional myopia", and Hynek su fers from this occupational malady to some extent, On Feb. 27th, N.B.C.'s "Open Mind" program had a UFO panel discussion. Who were on the "negative" side ? You guessed it! the Air Force's "front-men" Hynek and Menzel! You see, the Air Force selected these men as "fronts" precisely because they are "negative" on the whole matter. And the poor taxpayer supports the Air Force which diddles and hoaxes him. Hynek's "swamp" excursion cost the taxpayer a pretty penny. "Gas" indeed! I say Hynek full of HCT AIR and Menzel needs his lenses changed! But let's have congress settle the matter. I hate mysticism and cultism and the like. I am strictly scientific in my approach. Read M.K. Jessup's UFO ANNUAL for 1955 (Citadel Press) and you will read why I feel the Air Force doesn't care to give the truth to the public. It, just doesn't care to admit the "supernatural" or the "paranormal". It would be far too embarrassing! But the people of Michigan have been made to appear like country bumpkins through PHOTOCOPY FROM GERALD FORD LBRARY Hynek's "explanation" even the girls at dear old Hillsdale College! If there is a hearing, I suggest Mr. Mannor be called to testify. I believe he was absolutely sincere! Last January, the Royal Australian Air Force investigated huge "UFO" nests in Australian swamps. Appears the "saucers" are landing more and more frequently, lately! And animals won't carry on wildly by mere "swamp lights"! They DO carry on wildly when apparitions appear. Every psychical researcher is acquainted with this fact. Actually, congress should have a sincere psychical researcher at the hearings. Laugh if you will, but I suggest Jackie Gleason one of the most sane, and unbiased researchers I know of. J.B. Rhine MAY be a good candidate for the job, but I think he leans a bit tbo much to- wards dice-tossing experiments and plain E.S.P Let's hope an investigation is commenced very soon! Every kind wish! Dear Sir: I agree whole heartedly with your proposal for an investigation of the U.F.O.s allegedly sighted, near Ann Arbor, Michigan. It's of my belief that these U.F.O.S do exist, and come from another planet. I also have reasen to believe that these people in the U.F.O.s have extremely violent tendencies. I further believe that last weeks Gemini 8 short- circuit failure was caused by these U.F.O.s. The black- out last November along the Eastern Seaboard and Texas, was caused by these same U.F.O.s. Also, these recent Beeing collisions were also caused by these planet people These people have superior abilities. Also, they can fly at 50,000 miles an hour or better, with the anti- gravity secret. During the last year I have been extreme- ly interested in the UFO phenomenon. For the past three months I have been doing extensive research on UFOs in preparation for a pa- per for school. My research has led me into correspondence with several scientists. The recent fiasco in your home state of Michigan has aroused my deepest concern. Newscasts have stated that you intend to ask for a full blown Congressional hearing into the sightings. I hope you will do more than ask or suggest; I sincerely hope that you will push for an investigation, using all the influence in your possession. As a leader it is your job. As you probably realize there is a great deal of confusion con- cerning unidentified flying objects. Frankly, it is surprising how many people take these reports seriously. I know from my own re- search that many professional people, including scientists, are ve- ry much interested in the phenomenon. But the public in general is not aware of this fact. However, it seems that most people are dis- satisfied with the official explanations for many of the sightings. I feel certain that there is more to all this than meets the eye. The press certainly has not helped the situation at all and it is PHOTOCOPY FROM GERALD FORD I BRARY largely responsible for the vast confusion. I realize that Congress has far more important things to worry about. But it is my belief that the public has much interest in the UFO sightings. A serious, full fledged investigation by Congress would be a real blessing. It would be cuite beneficial and a few surprising facts might be discovered. Naturally if an investigation comes about I hope the investigation will not be limited to just the Michigan case. After all the explanation may be completely correct here. Congress has in its power the ability to resolve and clarify the entire UFO situation. Why let the people of this country, and apparently of the world, go on wondering what is what ? Some con- crete facts would help. Let's get rid of all the confusion. I think it is high time that something be done by our nation, official- ly, to find out the full, honest story in back of these reports. Sir, I know you are a very busy man and that such a hearing would involve considerable effort, cost and expense. But the time will not be wasted. Please do what you can to bring about a full blown Con- gressional hearing into unidentified flying objects with no holds barred. I would hope that the findings of such an investigation would be completely available to the public or else it would be to no avail. I hope you will find a few minutes to acknowledge this letter. I would appreciate hearing from you, and thank you very much for your time. Respectfully, andrew Schopick
