Dear Congressman Ford:
I heard on television, Friday, that you had called for a
Congressional Investigation into the recent Michigan U.F.O. sightings.
Concerning Dr. J. Alden Hynek's explanation of the pictures taken
by the Sheriff's Deputies on March 17, 1966 at about 7:30 P.M.
His explanation of the objects in the pictures of being the
Moon and Venus is completely false.

1. From the Detroit Newspapers, I have learned that the Moon
set at 2:11 P.M. on the 17th and rose again at 5:32 A.M. on
the 18th. It was impossible for the Moon to be seen at the
time of the sighting, you can check this for your self.
2. Since the Moon was at the apex of the "New Moon" phase on
March 20, little if any of it was visible at all on the 17th.
3. While I don't have the figures available, I think that you
will find that Venus did not rise untill 2 or 3 o'clock
in the Morning, again making Dr. Hynek's explanation impossible.
4. Even if the Moon had been in the position the Doctor says
it was, there is no Star or Planet that is both bright enough
or near enough to produce the effect presented in the pictures
at this time.
It seems fantastic that these Sheriff's Deputies, who have had
years of experience and are men of strong character and respons-
ibilty, could be so stupid as to be fooled by the Moon and
the Planet Venus, a thing so obvious.
Dr. Hynek, the Airforce consultant, either did not bother to
investigate the sightings or issued said explanation simply
to debunk them or both. You can draw your own conclusions on
this, but the record shows a similar treatment by the Airforce
on other sightings, both present and past, as well, and in other
parts of the Country.
I suggest that you consult some disinterested and independent
astromomical authority to verify the facts ( one through four) tha

as asking for a Congressional study of the Air Force
UFO investigations, especially in the recent Michigan
cases.
As a long-time student of the subject, I would like
to express my support for such a hearing. I hope, of
course, that the hearing would concentrate on the serious
segments of the subject and not become a sounding board
for the "lunatic fringes.' There is a wealth of substantial,
factual material to prove that the Air Force has not

the quantitative evidence itself supports a belief that
the objects do exist, that they are operated by intelligent
life and that they are extraterrestrial.

Probably the most informed person in America on
unidentified flying objects is Major Donale E. Keyhoe, head
of the National Investigations Committee on Merial Phenomena,
1536 Connecticut Ave., N. W. Washington. Perhaps you know him.
He states in one of his bulletins to members that
every time a move is made to get a congressional investigation of
unidentified flying objects the AF prevents it.
If you don't carry through on your idea of having
this investigation I will believe someone silenced you and since
you are a Republican and so am I, I wont like it a little bit.
Don't t you give up stick to this course until you
force a full investigation.

I see by the morning Orlandl Sentinel, that you are proposing an investigation
on this U F 0 business , and I think it is high time that something is
printed that could throw some better light, perhaps, on these well-meaning
aerial phenomenea. I will try thebest I can with one finger of my left hand
on account of a stroke some two yearsback. my left hand formally gaving

Back in the early fifties I lived in Idaho near Boise when an airman spied
a saucer and gave chase. Every time he sped up to try to catch it or even get
closer it took off like a flash. It could turn right sharp off to the right

It could stop and stand still in the air seeming to not be affected by gravity
It could divide and assamble itself with ease. This was in the daytime so no
lights were visible, however at night latervon lights were seen such asts as
a floursant tube around the perimiter. At the time we got stories out of the
department of the Air Force not too much unlike we still get - with little
if any proof of what cpuld be the reason for them. There were no rockets then.
Now if we have the courage to venture out with another angle so many seealled
scientists and numerous news media poo-poo or ridicule even a suggestion that
man seemes to want to evade. Nothing just happens - there has to be a reason.
We are having numerous eartquakes in the most unlikely places; severe drouths
which are bringing on starvation and eventually of course, pestilence. Even the

and bounds, we are determined to get to the moon, yet we wereconly told to
subdue the earth, so what is going on anyhow ?

be covered over by man, to tell us something about future events that will
have great significance? Does it not seem strange that we can spend more time
and efforts trying to disprove somethings today than we do to really endeavor
to get on the right track? Do you suppose that some faces we have around
today will ever get red enough to flag a train ? Why are wevpaying some people
in Wash. D. C. to give us their personal opinions like this when we can read
that eventually there would be great sign and wonders in the sky and on earth

For nearly 40 years now I have followed very closely the events that are too

I see by the morning Orlandl Sentinel, that you are proposing an investigation
on this U F 0 business , and I think it is high time that something is
printed that could throw some better light, perhaps, on these well-meaning
aerial phenomenea. I will try thebest I can with one finger of my left hand
on account of a stroke some two yearsback. my left hand formally gaving
only been more or less of a helpmate for fly right one which I now only carry
aroundfor the good it has done.
Back in the early fifties I lived in Idaho near Boise when an airman spied
a saucer and gave chase. Every time he sped up to try to catch it or even get
closer it took off like a flash. It could turn right sharp off to the right
or leftor up and down while our planes have to turn in the form of an arc.
It could stop and stand still in the air seeming to not be affected by gravity.
It could divide and assamble itself with ease. This was in the daytime so no
lights were visible, however at night latervon lights were seen suchrass as
a floursant tube around the perimiter. At the time we got stories out of the
department of the Air Force not too much unlike we still get - with little
if any proof of what cpuld be the reason for them. There were no rockets then,

man seemes to want to evade. Nothing just happens - there has to be a reason.
We are having numerous eartquakes in the most unlikely places; severe drouths

seasons are slipping some, defianc over the whole world is growing by leaps
and bounds, we are determined to get to the moon, yet we wereconly told to
subdue the earth, so what is going on anyhow ?
Now back to that neon sort of
light I mentioned earlier that surrounded the Saucer- a halo is a symbal of
spiritual things, so why could God not be trying at pkace where it can not
be covered over by man, to tell us something about future events that will
have great significance? Does it not seem strange that we can spend more time
and efforts trying to disprove somethings today than we do to really endeavor
to get on the right track? Do you suppose that some faces we have around
today will ever get red enough to flag a train ? Why are wevpaying some people
in Wash. D. C. to give us their personal opinions like this when we can read
that eventually there would be great sign and wonders in the sky and on earth 3
in an effort to warn the peoples for that day? or is it this day ?
For nearly 40 years now I have followed very closely the events that are too =
and are preceding a great change of world affairs and hardly a week goes by
anymore but what some momentuious event occurs, not just happens, to prove
that we are fast approaching that time. Not knowing too much about your
private life this too may fall on deaf ears, who knows ?
If hearings are held, I can walk now good enough with a cane to appear before
a committee to help get to the bottom of this matter if that is what is really
wanted, but I sure can not walk that far from here. Even if I must say so
myself, you would find upon personal investigation that I am a substantial
citizen - not a crank.

I should like to urge you to initiate a complete and open
Congressional investigation of "Unidentified Flying Objects".
UFO', as you are well-aware, have been observed in considerable
numbers in your state within the past few weeks. The Air Force
"expert", Dr. J. Allen Hynek, says the sightings in Michigan
were probably marsh gas. I am still laughing about that!
As you know, pictures were taken of the sightings by a
policeman who observed the phenomena. Dr. Hynek, on the Walter
Cronkite CBS news program last evening, said the photographs
showed the planet Venus and a crescent moon. Do you have any
idea at all how such a ridiculous explanation must make that
fine policeman feel? If I were that policeman, I would take
Dr. Hynek and the Air Force into a court of law.

In the February 22, 1966, issue of LOOK magazine, there is
a very enlightening article on UFO's that were seen last
September in Exeter, N. H. If you have not read the article,
you should try to do SO. I should also like to urge you to
contact the National Investigations Committee on Aerial
Phenomena in Washington, D. C. This organization is dedicated
to ending such harassment and humiliation as happened to the
fine and honest people of your state who courageously and
truthfully reported what they saw. About six years ago, I
saw five red lights in the sky at night. They were moving in
an unusual undulating manner. They were not conventional air
craft such as often fly over this valley. I did not report
this sighting to any official agency because I am familiar with
how these reports have been treated by the Air Force since
1947. I refuse to be humbled intellectually the way that poor
policeman, and others, had to face the Air Force's "simple"
explanation. Some friends of mine have seen UFO's (circular
silver discs) during the daytime. My friends and I have some
quite definite conclusions on this whole matter of UFO's.
I sincerely hope you will push for an immediate investigation
of the Air Force fiasco in your state. Even if you do not, I
still refuse to believe that the fine people of Michigan are a
bunch of ignorant fatheads--as Air Force "expert", Dr. Hynek,
clearly implies.

desire to conduct a full investigation of so-called
"flying saucer" or "Ufo" sightings in your state of
Michigan and other parts of the country.
This sounds like a sensible thing to do in view of
all the responsible people who claim to have seen these
objects over the past twenty or more years.
May I suggest that you obtain a copy of the book
"The Flying Saucer Conspiracy" by Major Donald E.
Keyhoe, U.S. Marine Corps, Retired, published by
Henry Holt & Co. If Major Keyhoe's credentials are

in order, then certainly you ought to launch a complete
imquiry. This is the most fascimating book I've ever
read
and I'd like your comments after you've read
it and perhaps spoken to the author.
If, as Major Keyhoe states in his book, there is
now, and has been for some time, a high level censorship
going on with regard to these strange incidents, then
it is time the government told the public what's going on.
For, if the alledged censorship is designed to prevent
panic or fear, imagine what the consequences might be
if sometime in the future оде of these things were to
descend near a highly pepulated area with the people
having been told nothing by their government.
Perhaps you have already read this book, but if not,
I urge you to de SO. Inasmuch as the book is rather
thoroughly documented, one is inclined to accept what
the author has to day.

too many qualified persons to be brushed off as hallucinations,
weather balloons, or the like. Indeed, there is no question in my
mind that these things do exist and are indeed intelligently con-
trolled machines. I feel confident that any Congressional investi-
gation would reach a similar conclusion.
To anyone familiar with the UFO subject it is an established
fact that the United States Air Force has andxd followed and con-
tinues to follow a policy that attempts to ignore the UFO phenomena
or, when impossible, explain it away with ridiculous explanations
and ridicule of military and civilian pilots, police officers, and
other persons of the bighest character and competence.
I urge you to do all that you can to obtain a serious Congress-
ional investigation in this matter. I am also urging my Represent-
ative, Rep. Henry P. Smith, to do the same.

Not all of us here at the University of Michigan are
Viet Nam protestors! In particular, I protest, as I'm sure
you do, the sloppy handling of the U.F.O. incidents by Dr. Hynek.

The real issue at stake is the censorship of information from

explanations will convince people that explaining one is as good
dismissing the whole series of sightings 8.8 mistakes, mirages,
reflections, etc? How dumb do they think we are?

Evidence, published by N.I.C.A.P., of which I am a member.
It would make good homework assignments for each senator!
I respect and praise the Air Force for their deterrent strength,
but really wonder about its power of censorship. I fully

I am writing to you in regards to your
recent proposal for a congressional investigation
of UFO reports. Should such an investigation actually
be undertaken, it could provide the needed stimulus for
an objective scientific analysis of this phenomenon.
It could also contribute to the intolerable (to a
scientist) web of confusion which surrounds the subject.
This possibility should be taken into consideration. I
should like to emphasize that the value of a congression-
-al probe will depend upon the evidence, or lack of same,
submitted.
I think it is fairly obvious that the one
individual whose testimony would have the greatest
influence would be Dr. J. Allen Hynek of Northwestern
University. Should Dr. Hynek be called, I believe his
testimony would surprise many who consider him to be
an unswerving skeptic.
One of the most pertinent factors, which must
not be ignored in an examination, is the proper
historical perspective of the phenomenon itself. One
of the most striking and significant examples of this
factor is the vast wave of UFO observations throughout
the American Mid-west in the year 1897 (long before the
Wright Brothers flight). The number of reports from
this period which I have thusfar uncovered, far exceeds
those of the most recent observations.
I would certainly be willing to present this
data before an investigating committee should I be
requested to do so.

For about eight years I have been a member of the NICAP organization
headed by Major Donald Kehoe. I presume you are entirely familiar with

this organization since it has its headquarters in Washington.
I was quite interested in last week's outbreak of sightings which started
early Saturday morning, March 19, at La Porte, Indiana, and were also
seen at Dexter and Hillsdale, Michigan, and discussed the matter with our
radio station WGHN. I was asked to go on the air with the owner, Douglas
Djapkes, and their program manager. In essence, my position was that it
seemed to me that there is a growing trend toward consistency in these
reports not only in the general outline of what people see but in small
details. For instance, numerous times reports have stated that as these
objects settle toward the ground, they sway or swing something like a
fallen leaf. This would have no significance except for the fact that it
does bear out a certain consistency in the reports. Again, within the last
two or three years, there have been numerous reports of objects hovering
over moving vehicles, sometimes frightening the occupants of the vehicle
almost to the point of hysterics. I recall that last summer there were five
sightings over northeastern France in which this happening was repeated.
So, without being biased and frankly admitting that I have never seen a
UFO or anything that resembles one, I took the position that it is high time
that we as individual citizens - and perhaps officially as well in high levels
of government - should consider the matter as anything but a joke. And it
is long past time that we can afford to scoff at it and dismiss it with the
trivial and sometimes rather inane explanations given, principally by the

In receiving bulletins from NICAP over the time of my membership, I
have tried earnestly to be strictly objective and to keep any personal
bias out of the matter. I have considered the phenomenon of UFO as a
possibility, and repeatedly stated that I had no idea as to the degree of
probability involved. However, in the light of what appears to me to be
a growing consistency focusing on these reports if we look at the matter
as a study in human behavior, we find that this human behavior does not
come from reports of irresponsible cranks but rather from people in many,
many cases who must be considered as reliable, responsible people. I
further note which an area of seriousness in contemplating the matter by the lay
citizenry is rapidly growing, and the idea of scoffing or laughing the thing
out of consideration is diminishing. My personal feeling is that this is a
healthy reaction.
In view of these observations, I was most gratified at the position that you
took as revealed on station WOOD-TV, Grand Rapids, last Thursday evening

for I believe that far from being a joke, the matter could be very, very
serious, and the government would be well advised to lend every effort
toward as exhaustive information as possible concerning the phenomenon.

Dear Congressman Ford:
Your views on supporting the President in his actions
and policy in Viet Nam do not seem to be shared by many
other Americans.
Recent polls have shown that anywhere from 50% to 65%
of the voters do not support Johnson over the way he is
handling the war there. Isn't it about time you took off
the padded gloves and started catching up to vocal feelings
of your fellow Americans by speaking out against this present
situation? Fither we make a real effort to win, or we get out.
We could set up a strong defense line near the neutral zone
near the parallel or border with North Vietnam, clear a path
a few hundred feet wide, fortify it all the way to the Mekong
and then up river - using the river as a natural defense line.

Your statement that we should have an investigation with
the U. S. Air Force required to testify and produce their
records is a good idea, with regard to the unknown flying objects.
That Dr. Hynek of Northwestern must have felt desparate
last week when he declared, from observing the photographs of
those strong lights in the sky, that they were nothing more
than Venus and the moon. I am sure the nation's scientists,
especially the astronomers as colleagues of Hynek, will be
interested to know, as a byproduct of his theory, that the
moon and Venus have a parallel orbit.
Let us learn the facts of these sightings right now.
