This has given you a\nspecial sensitivity to the social needs of each gen-\neration. And this has also been the guiding force\nbehind your impressive contributions to the vitality\nof our American democracy.\nThese solemn days of worship which you celebrate\nhave a message for all Americans. They exhort\nus to search our souls, to render an inner account-\ning, and a self-examination of the standards we\nprofess and the actions we perform. They invite\nus to a return to righteousness and truth and to a\nrebirth in the spirit of neighborliness and brother-\nhood. They remind us that we are in God's hands\nand that He has given us our lives in trust to use\nin His service.\nAt a time which urgently tests our will as a people\nto put humanity's interest above self-interest, we\ncan be greatly sustained and guided by the tradi-\ntions of valor and resilience that mark the history\nof the Jewish people.\nHerall R.
