I welcome the privilege of serving as\nHonorary Chairman of this annual observance.\nThe dedicated members of the Laymen's National Bible\nCommittee who yearly sponsor this event deserve to be\ncommended on their efforts to promote greater know-\nledge, use and understanding of the Holy Book. Their\nendeavors are a strong force for good in our daily lives.\nBible reading has been a tradition in my family for as\nlong as I can remember. I firmly believe that one can\nexperience great solace and encouragement from the\nBible's timeless and stirring passages. My personal\nfavorite of these is from the Third Chapter, fifth and\nsixth verses of the Book of Proverbs:\n\"Trust in the Lord with all thine heart;\nand lean not unto thine own understanding.\"\n\"In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and\nHe shall direct thy paths.\"\nIt was not chance that led me to have my Bible opened\nto these words as I took the oath of Office of President\nof the United States.
