THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN
TALKING POINTS: PRIVATE DINNER FOR
LABOR SECRETARY JOHN DUNLOP
THURSDAY, MARCH 19, 1975
- 1 -
1. THOSE OF YOU AT THIS DINNER KNOW HOW WELL
QUALIFIED JOHN DUNLOP IS TO BE SECRETARY OF LABOR.
BUT I'M SURE YOU'RE IMPRESSED AS I AM THAT HIS FORMER BOSS
AND THREE FORMER DEPARTMENT SECRETARIES HOSTED THIS
SPECIAL DINNER IN HIS HONOR.
- 2 -
I'M DELIGHTED TO JOIN IN SALUTING JOHN AND TO KNOW THAT
THE DISTINGUISHED HOSTS HERE TONIGHT AGREE WITH ME THAT HE
IS THE RIGHT MAN FOR A TOUGH JOB.
- 3 -
2.
I WANT TO THANK PRESIDENT BOK (BOCK) FOR
ALLOWING THIS ADMINISTRATION TO BORROW STILL ANOTHER
OUTSTANDING SCHOLAR FROM HARVARD UNIVERSITY.
- 4 -
THERE ARE TIMES WHEN IT SEEMS TO ME THAT WASHINGTON MUST LOOK
ON HARVARD AS ITS FARM CLUB -- BUT I'M SURE THAT CAMBRIDGE
IS EQUALLY CONVINCED IT'S THE OTHER WAY AROUND.
AT ANY
RATE, I WANT TO COMPLIMENT HARVARD ON ITS LEND-LEASE PROGRAM.
- 5 -
3. ALL OF US IN THIS ROOM KNOW HOW IMPORTANT TO
THE COUNTRY IS THE DEPARTMENT THAT JOHN NOW HEADS.
AND
WE KNOW HE HAS ONE OF THE TOUGHEST JOBS IN TOWN ON HIS HANDS:
JOBS FOR AMERICANS, FOR ONE THING.
BUT WE ALSO KNOW THAT
HE WILL TACKLE THAT RESPONSIBILITY AS HE HAS EVERY OTHER THRUST
UPON HIM -- AND HE WILL SUCCEED.
- 6 -
4. WHATEVER THE POLITICAL OR PHILOSOPHICAL VIEWS OF
EACH OF US, THERE IS UNITY AMONG US IN OUR DESIRE TO IMPROVE
THE ECONOMY AND THE WELFARE OF THE AMERICAN WORKER.
IN THE MONTHS AHEAD, JOHN AND MANY IN THIS ROOM WILL BE
WORKING TO ACHIEVE SOLUTIONS TO SOME OF THE MOST COMPLEX
ECONOMIC PROBLEMS THIS NATION EVER FACED.
- 7 -
I AM CONFIDENT OF THE SUCCESS OF THESE EFFORTS.
5. WHEN JOHN WAS SWORN IN YESTERDAY, HE
DESCRIBED AMERICANS AS A "CAN-DO" PEOPLE.
I AGREE.
IT IS THIS FAITH IN THE SPIRIT OF THE PEOPLE THAT MAKES ME so SURE
SOLUTIONS WILL BE FOUND.
- 8 -
6. JOHN ALSO SAID HE HOPED LONG-TERM OBJECTIVES
WOULD NOT BE OVERLOOKED WHILE WE ACT TO SOLVE IMMEDIATE
PROBLEMS.
THIS IS THE TASK THAT FACES ALL OF US IN THIS
NATION IN 1975 TO ACT WISELY IN THE PRESENT AND PLAN WELL
FOR THE FUTURE.
WE HAVE THE WILL AND THE TALENT TO DO BOTH.
THANK YOU AND GOOD NIGHT.
