COMMENTS: Per our conversations, this luncheon is an annual event
dating back years and years. The Ladies of the Senate
meet once a week to tie bandages, etc. for the Red Cross.
They annually honor the First Lady. All will be in Red
Cross costumes. Their President is, of course,
Mrs. Rockefeller and Mrs. Clayborne Pell is their First
Vice President. The First Lady traditionally reciprocates
with a luncheon at the White House. This, as the calendar
reflects, will be held here on Monday, May 5. Thank you.

Dear Mrs. Weidenfeld:
Each spring, The Ladies of the Senate give
a luncheon honoring our First Lady. This year we
are entertaining Mrs. Ford on Tuesday, April 22, 1975.
The luncheon will be given in the Caucus Room of the
Senate Office Building.
Mrs. Ford will arrive at 12:00 noon and will be
met by Mrs. Nelson Rockefeller, the President of the
Ladies of the Senate; Mrs. Lawton Chiles, Chairman of
the luncheon; and Mrs. J. Glenn Beall, Co-Chairman of
the luncheon, who will escort her to the Caucus Room.
Other guests invited include the wives of former
Presidents, the wives of former Vice-Presidents, and
wives of Members of the Cabinet.
The press and photographers are invited to the
Caucus Room for a preview of the luncheon between
11:00 and 11:30 a.m. when a press information sheet,
giving details about the committee, decorations, menu,
entertainment, etc. will be available.
The committee requests that the press and photo-
graphers leave the Caucus Room promptly at 11:30 and
move out to the hall to await the arrival of the
luncheon guests.

BACKGROUND
The Ladies of the Senate meet once a week to tie bandages for
the Red Cross. Each spring they honor the First Lady at
luncheon at the Senate, with a reciprocal luncheon at the White
House which you will host on May 5. By tradition, you will join
the Cabinet Wives and the Wives of the Vice President and former
Vice Presidents in a Receiving Line prior to the luncheon.
Following the luncheon, a program with entertainment will
include a presentation to you of two antique prints as a gift from
the Senate Wives. A brief response of appreciation is appropriate.

Gift
The gift for Mrs. Ford from The Ladies of the
Senate is a pair of small prints X 3"):
one of Wakefield, the original residence of
the George Washington family and the other of
Mt. Vernon. They were done by Henry Hays who,
along with his son by the same name, was
producing about 1850.
The only social activity of The Ladies of the
Senate is giving the luncheon each year for the
First Lady. The usual activity of the group is
making blood bank sponges, layettes, and knitted
garments for the Red Cross every Tuesday in
Room 155 of the Old Senate Office Building.
