THE WHITE HOUSE
Office of the Press Secretary to Mrs. Ford
Mrs. Ford will greet the Federal Advisory Committees on the
Status of Women Tuesday, May 6 at 11:45 at the White House.
She will pose for a group photo and mingle with them informally
at coffee afterwards.
The meeting, called by the White House Office of Public Liaison,
marks the first time the four government advisory committees
on the status of women have met. They are: The Citizen's
Advisory Council on the Status of Women, the Defense Advisory
Committee on Women in the Service (DACOWITS), the Secretary's
Advisory Committeeon Women, Department of Labor and the
Secretary's Advisory Committee on the Rights and Responsibilities
of Women, Department of HEW.
The combined committees will hold their meeting in Rm. 450
of the EOB preceding Mrs. Ford's greeting. A schedule of
their program is attached.
The Citizen's Advisory Council was created by Executive Order in
1963 and recently extended by President Ford. It is composed of
20 members appointed by the President. The Council meets two
to three times a year and is housed in the Department of Labor.
The mandate of the Council is to serve as a primary means for
suggesting and stimulating action with private institutions,
organizations and individuals working for improvement of conditions
of special concern to women.
The DACOWITS makes recommendations concerning women in the
various branches of the armed services. They have worked for
equal entitlements for women in the services and particularly for
married women in the services. They have also conducted a study
on the housing situation for women in the service.
The Department of Labor Committee was created in 1974 and is
composed of 16 women and two men. The Committee is concerned
with manpower legislation.
The HEW Committee was created in 1972, with 16 women and three
men appointed by the Secretary. They, issue reports to the Secretary
dealing with topics of concern to HEW and particularly to women in
these areas.

BACKGROUND: There exist at the present time four commissions in
the federal government which are charged with concerns
for the status of women. Although each commission meets
two or three times a year, the four commissions have
never met together. Thus this is an historic meeting
appropriately held during International Women's Year.
The meeting was called by Pat Lindh.
The participants of the four commissions will meet all
morning in the Conference Room of the EOB where they
will hear reports from departmental representatives,
the chairpersons of each of the four commissions, and a
brief report from the coordinator of the International
Women's Year Commission.
The four commissions are:
1) Citizens' Advisory Council on the Status of Women.
Mrs. Jacqueline Gutwillig, Chairman. This is a
Presidential Commission to suggest and stimulate
action with private institutions, organizations,
and individuals working for improvement of conditions
of special concern to women.
2) DACOWITZ (Defense Advisory Committee on Women in
the Service).

4) Secretary's Advisory Committee on the Rights and
Responsibilities of Women, Department of HEW.
F.Y.I., each of the groups has recommended and encouraged
passage of the E.R.A.
SEQUENCE:
11:45 a.m. When the commissions' participants have come from the
EOB and have gathered on the steps of the South Portico,
Susan Porter will escort you to the South Portico where
you will step into the photograph.
11:48 a.m. When the photos are finished, you will want to turn and
face the group and informally tell them you are pleased
they can all be together at the White House and invite
them for coffee inside.
Mingle informally in the Diplomatic Reception Room.
12:10 p.m. Return to Family Quarters.
NOTE:
-A White House photographer will be present.
-There will be press coverage.
-Coffee will be set up in the Map and China Rooms to
permit mingling throughout that whole area.

PRESIDENT TO GET A WOMAN ON THE SUPREME COURT "AS SOON AS POSSIBLE."
THERE ARE NO PRESNSST VACANCIES ON THE HIGH BENCH, BUT WHEN ONE
DOES OCCUR THE FIRST LADY TOLD REPORTERS THAT A WOMAN SHOULD BE
APPOINTED.
"I THINK I'VE DONE A GOOD JOB,' SHE TOLD REPORTERS. "I GOT A WOMAN
IN THE CABINET." SHE REFERRED TO CARLA HILLS, NEWLY APPOINTED
SECRETARY OF HOUSING AND URABN DEVELOPMENT.
MRS. FORD IS ONE OF THE NATION'S LEADING PROMOTERS OF THE ERA
WHICH HAS SUFFERED SOME SETBACKS IN MOVING THROUGH STATE LEGISLATURES
FOR THE TWO-THIRDS RATFICATION NECESSARY.
"I NEVER GIVE UP,' SHE SAID. "I'M WORKING ON IT."
THE SUBJECT OF WOMEN AND THEIR CAMPAIGN FOR EQUAILITY IN THE
PROFESSIONS AND ELSEWHERE CAME UP AT A RECEPTION WHICH MRS. FORD GA VE
IN HONOR OF THE FEDERAL ADISOVRY COMMITTESS ON THE STAUTS OF WOMEN.
MRS. FORD WAS CONGRATULATED BY SEVERAL WOMEN GUESTS FOR HER ROLE
IN PUSHING ERA. MRS. JAMES COX OF MID WEST CITY, OKLA., PRESENTED THE
FIRST LADY WITH COMMANCHE INDIAN BEADS IN RED, WHITE AND BLUE WITH A
MEDALLION IN THE FORM OF THE BICENTENAIL LOGO.
"I'M WORKING ON GETTING A WOMAN ON THE SUPREM COURT AS SOON AS
POSSIBLE," SHE SAID. "I ALWAYS HAVE IT IN THE BACK OF MY MIND."
