FORD--CHRISTMAS WASHINGTON (AP) -- IT WILL BE THE FOUR DAYS OF CHRISTMAS FOR FEDERAL
WORKERS. PRESIDENT FORD SIGNED AN EXECUTIVE ORDER MONDAY GIVING GOVERNMENT
EMPLOYES THE FRIDAY AFTER CHRISTMAS AS A FEDERAL HOLIDAY, EXTENDING
THEIR TIME OFF THROUGH THE WEEKEND.
THE WHITE HOUSE ANNOUNCED HOWEVER THAT FORD DOES NOT PLAN TO DO THE
SAME FOR THE FRIDAY AFTER NEW YEARS DAY.
FORD HAD WITHHELD HIS DECISION ON GRANTING THE FRIDAY HOLIDAY --
TRADITIONAL WHEN CHRISTMAS FALLS ON THURSDAY AS IT WILL THIS YEAR --
BECAUSE OF ADDED COSTS.
THE CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION RECOMMENDED THE ADDITIONAL TIME OFF;
THE DEFENSE DEPARTMENT, CITING PREMIUM PAY RUNNING INTO MILLIONS OF
DOLLARS FOR ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL WHO WOULD HAVE TO WORK ANYWAY, LOBBIED
AGAINST THE EXTRA DAY.
POSTAL WORKERS, WHO GET THEIR VACATION ORDERS FROM THE POSTMASTER
GENERAL AND NOT THE PRESIDENT, WILL NOT GET FRIDAY OFF. POSTMASTER
GENERAL BENJAMIN F. BAILAR TURNED DOWN POSTAL HOLIDAYS FOR DEC. 26 AND
JAN. 2, SAYING THE ENORMOUS ADDITIONAL SALARY COSTS COULD NOT BE
BORNE AT A TIME OF AUSTERITY AIMED AT LOWERING A HUGE POSTAL DEFICIT.
FORD'S ANNOUNCEMENT CAME AS THE HOLIDAY SEASON MOVED INTO FULL
SWING. ON THURSDAY, THE PRESIDENT WILL LIGHT THE NATIONAL CHRISTMAS
TREE, WHICH STANDS BEHIND THE WHITE HOUSE.
FIRST LADY BETTY FORD LED A TOUR OF THE WHITE HOUSE CHRISTMAS
DECORATIONS, WHICH INCLUDE AN 18-FOOT DOUGLAS FIR TREE, TRIMMED WITH
3,000 HAND-MADE ORNAMENTS AND TINY GLITTERING LIGHTS, IN THE BLUE
ROOM.
THE FIRST FAMILY WILL BE TOGETHER IN VAIL, COLO., AGAIN THIS YEAR,
LEAVING THE WHITE HOUSE ON DEC. 23 FOR A SIX-DAY VACATION.
LATER, THE PRESIDENT JOINED MRS. FORD AND DAUGHTER SUSAN IN THE EAST
ROOM FOR THE FIRST OF THREE CHRISTMAS PARTIES THEY WILL GIVE -- THIS
ONE FOR MORE THAN 1,100 WHITE HOUSE STAFF MEMBERS.
