There are a limited number of motor pool cars available
for use by members of the Presidential Party. All requests
for the use of a vehicle should be made to the motor pool

Los Galgos (Extension 613) or by phoning Embassy extensions
458 or 459.

their name and location/destination and time required. The
dispatcher will then give the requesting party the vehicle
control number which will be in the lower right-hand corner
of the windshield.
For parties requiring transportation from the Moncloa Palace,
a limited number of vehicles will be stationed at the Palace
itself. Requests should be made to the State Department
Control Officer through the White House Advance Office at
the Palace.
Due to the limited number of available vehicles, all users
of vehicles are requested to release the driver within
30 minutes of arrival at destination.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Madrid, Spain
1. Moncloa Palace
Located next to the campus of the University of Madrid,
the palace of La Moncloa is one of the most picturesque resi-
dences on the city's outskirts. La Moncloa is surrounded by
trees and hills, faces recreation park Casa de Campa, and has
a clear view of the Guadarrama Mountain Range. During the Civil
War of 1936-39, the palace was completely destroyed because it
formed part of the front lines and was continually attacked and
occupied in the battles in that part of Madrid. A new building
was constructed between 1946-53 near the old site but on a
higher location. The square floor design, utilizing three sides
and an open patioed fourth side, includes three floors and a
basement. The interior was decorated predominantly in the neo-
classical and imperial styles and displays antique (rococo) fur-
niture, tapestries, clocks, chandeliers, and china--all furnished
by the Patrimonio Nacional. The palace also includes all the
modern conveniences and is utilized as the official residence for
important personalities and chiefs of state who visit Spain.
2. Princess Sophia of Greece
Princess Sophia, 36, is the eldest daughter of the late
King Paul and Queen Frederika and sister of King Constantine II.
Sophia and Prince Juan Carlos of Spain were married in Athens in
a combined Greek Orthodox and Roman Catholic ceremony in May 1962.
(Sophia adopted the Roman Catholic faith in June 1962.) Sophia
was trained as a pediatric nurse before her marriage. The Princess
shares her husband's love of sports, especially sailing. Since
establishing their residence at the palace of Zarzuela in Madrid,
Prince Juan Carlos and Princess Sophia have toured Spain exten-
sively. The royal couple has three children: Elena, Christina,
and Felipe. The Princess speaks fluent Spanish, German, and
English, in addition to her native Greek.
3. General Franco
General Franco was married in 1923 to the former Carmen
Polo Y Martinez Valdes, the daughter of a wealthy Austrian mer-
chant. Their only child, a daughter called Carmencita (Maria
del Carmen Franco Y Polo), is married to prominent Madrid cardio-
logist, Dr. Cristobal Martinez Bordiu Ortega Y Vascaran, Marques
de Villaverde. The Francos have seven grandchildren.
Madrid
Page 2
Sometimes appreciatively referred to as "La Generalissima,"
Mrs. Franco reputedly has enjoyed full partnership with her hus-
band and has had more influence on his decisions than Spanish
tradition encourages. In recent years Mrs. Franco has substi-
tuted for her husband in public functions. Some of the family
financial interests are in her name, e.g., real estate. Mrs.
Franco devotes a great deal of her time to charity and willingly
lends her name and presence to fund drives supporting such insti-
tutions as hospitals, homes for the aged, and orphanages.
Both attend Mass several times a week.
5. Mrs. Weells Stabler
Miss Imily Atkinson was married to Weells Stabler, now
Ambassador to Spain, in Salzburg, Austria in 1953. They have
four children (two girls, aged 20 and 19, two boys, aged 17
and 17). Eldest daughter is student at American University and
second girl at Skidmore College. The two boys attend St. Georges
School, New Port, Rhode Island. Mrs. Stabler grew up in Boston
and attended Milton Academy. She worked for two years for a
radio station in Greenwich, Connecticut, producing and voicing
a half-hour daily program ("Town Topics") and later as research
assistant in international industrial consulting firm in New
York. Personal interests: skiing, tennis, and swimming.
THE WHITE HOUSE
WASHINGTON
THE PRESIDENT AND MRS. FORD'S VISIT TO EUROPE of
MADRID, SPAIN AND SALZBURG, AUSTRIA
SUNDAY - JUNE 1, 1975
DAY # 5
From:
Terry Donnell
SALESAS REALES CHURCH
At 7:15 a. m., you will attend a Catholic Mass at the Salesas Reales Church,
one of Madrid's most beautiful churches. It was completed in 1787. The
front is remarkable for its simplicity and for the harmony of its elements,
one of which is sculptor Julian San Martin's bas-relief representing St.
Francis de Sales (after whom the Order was named) and the founder of
the Order, Juana Francisca Freymot. The inside of the church continues
the simplicity of the front, and makes one think of it as a chapel rather
than a church. It has beautiful marble altar pieces, and above the main
altar is a painting by Agustin Esteve, with the same theme as the bas-
relief at the entrance. All the other paintings in the church were done by
one of the nuns, who is still alive, but who unfortunately, will be in
Cordoba when you see her work.
The name of the priest saying mass is Emiliano Perez. He is the priest
who normally says mass in this church.
The Monastery of the Visitation of St. Mary (to the right of the church)
is called a "monastery" but there are no monks - only 35 nuns. The
Mother Superior, who agreed to arrange this special mass for you, is
Maria Josefa Heras. The nuns dedicate themselves to the almost lost
arts of baking and embroidering. They maintain the church and the
monastery with the proceeds of their sales and help the poor.
2.
DEPARTURE FROM MADRID
Generalissimo and Mrs. Franco will arrive at Moncloa Palace at 8:25 a. m.
and are greeted by you and Mrs Ford. After a minute meeting with
the Generalissimo, you ride with him in his car to the airport. Upon
arrival, you will be met by the Minister of Air Cuadra and escorted to a
VIP Lounge where you bid farewell to the assembled dignitaries. You and
the General then review the troops, ascend the platform for the playing of the
Anthems, and after bidding Generalissimo and Mrs. Franco goodbye, board
Air Force One and depart for Salzburg.
SALZBURG ARRIVAL
You and Mrs. Ford will be met at the Salzburg Airport by Chancellor
and Mrs. Bruno Kreisky and other key Austrian and American dignitaries.
After passing by the ceremonial honor guard (this is not a military unit
so no salutes are offered or returned), you and Chancellor Kreisky
proceed to a stand-up microphone where the Chancellor makes welcoming
remarks and you respond. LIVE LOCAL TELEVISION. Following your
remarks you and Chancellor Kreisky depart in your car for the Schloss
Klessheim (Presidential Residence).
The Schloss Klessheim, which is to be your residence while in Salzburg,
lies two miles northwest of the city. The imposing baroque mansion was
originally built for Archbishop Johann Ernst Graf Thun by Fischer Von
Erlach in 1700-09, but became the property of the Austrian Emperor
at the time of the Congress of Vienna (1816). Emperor Francis Joseph I
gave it to his brother, Archduke Ludwig Viktor, in the 1860's and decreed
it to be the Archduke's residence. In 1921, the Province of Salzburg
acquired Schloss Klessheim from the heirs of Archduke Ludwig Viktor.
The palace is now used to lodge guests of the Provincial Government and
for seminars, congresses, ceremonial occasions, and in the summer is
used as a school for diplomats. The park contains a golf course, swimming
pool, and the "Hoyoshaus" a garden pavillion.
3.
HEAD TO HEAD MEETING WITH CHANCELLOR KREISKY
At 11:00 a. m. upon arrival at the Schloss Klessheim, you and Chancellor
Kreisky proceed to a sitting room for a 30-minute head to head meeting.
LUNCH AT SCHLOSS FUSCHL
You depart the Schloss Klessheim at 12:40 p.m. en route the Schloss
Fuschl where you will attend a working lunch hosted by President
Sadat. Following the dessert course, President Sadat will offer a
toast, to which you respond. You return to the Schloss Klessheim
for personal time of 1 hour and 50 minutes.
The Schloss Fuschl, now an elegant hotel, is situated about 12 miles
east of Salzburg overlooking the Lake of Fuschl. The original castle,
a late Gothic tower, was built in 1450 by the Salzburg archbishops
as a hunting lodge and was in the possession of the church until 1830.
In 1830, the castle became private property until 1938 when it was
occupied during World War II by German Foreign Minister von
Ribbentrop and his family. The tower was turned into a hotel in
1948 and enlarged by adjoining buildings with the help of Marshall
Plan funds.
HEAD TO HEAD MEETING WITH PRESIDENT SADAT AT RESIDENZ
You depart the Schloss Klessheim at 4:45 p. m. en route Residenz for a
90-minute head to head meeting with President Sadat. You return to
the Schloss Klessheim at 6:55 p.m. and have personal time for 1 hour,
and 20 minutes.
The Residenz was built in the 16th century and housed the Salzburg
archbishops and their courts when it became more comfortable to stay
in the city rather than on the high fortress. With its extensive court-
yard where small operas and concerts are performed during the
Salzburg Festival, as well as with its beautifully decorated imperial
rooms, the residenz serves today for representational functions hosted
by the Governor of the province of Salzburg.
4.
STATE DINNER AT RESIDENZ (DARK BUSINESS SUIT)
You and Mrs. Ford depart the Schloss Klessheim at 8:15 p.m.
for a State Dinner hosted by Chancellor and Mrs. Kreisky honoring
you and President Sadat. At approximately 10:00 p.m., and before
dessert, Chancellor Kreisky offers a toast to you and President
Sadat. Following President Sadat, you make your response toast.
After dessert and coffee, you return to your residence - --arriving
there at approximately 11:20 p.m.
