For once it was said that when all the world was still,
and humanity was to be judged;
All the deeds of lovingkindness were balanced against all the
acts of injustice.
And a good woman did act
To help her family and her society to better this world
Then the scales were tipped to good and the world was better.
We are blessed to have that woman, Betty Ford, in our midst
We, of the Golden Slipper Club, have been graced by her presence.

Mr. David H. Lissy,
Associate Director-Domestic Council,
The White House,
Washington, D. C. 20500
Dear David:
The other day I was talking to Frank Brodsky who is president of
the Golden Slipper Club, an organization with which I am sure you
are familiar, and he told me that he has been in touch with the
White House. You may have guessed that he has extended an invi-
tation to the President to come to Philadelphia to receive the
Club's "Bicentennial Award."
Frank told me that Senator Scott had endorsed the request in writing
and that the date is open - subject only to the requirement that it
be sometime before mid-May.
There is ample precedent for a President of the United States to
appear at the Golden Slipper - Harry Truman was honored in person
and Ladybird Johnson and Pat Nixon were both honored while their
respective husbands were in the White House.
For the record, Golden Slipper is a largely Jewish organization
which operates a non-sectarian charity camp in the Pocono Mountains
(800 boys and girls have visited there every year for about a
quarter of a century). The other charitable works of the Slipper
include scholarships, emergency welfare to victims of tragedy, an
extensive program aiding senior citizens and the like.
If there is anything you can do to "push this invitation along" I
would consider it a personal favor. The format could be worked out
to the President's satisfaction and the political implications I
think would be extremely favorable. throughout Southeastern Penn-
sylvania. Thanks and best regards,
As always,

Dear Mrs. Ford:

The Golden Slipper Club is one of the leading fraternal and
philanthropic organizations in the Philadelphia area for over 55
years. As the president of the organization, it is my pleasure to
extend, on the organization's behalf, an invitation to you to attend
our next membership meeting as our guest of honor. This will be one
of the area's major Bicentennial events to turn the nations attention
to Philadelphia in 1976.
The Executive Committee of the Golden Slipper would like to honor
you for your service to our country, at a meeting to be held any
evening of the following dates:
Monday, March 22, Thursday, March 25 or Monday,
April
26
per B7.
The Golden Slipper Camp covers 750 acres in the Pocono Mountains
and it has served underprivileged boys and girls, regardless of race
or creed for over a quarter of a century. Its present expanded facil-
ities allow about 730 youngsters to enjoy three-week camping sessions
in the summer. The camp is supported, not only by the philanthropic
efforts of the Club, but by the Federation of Jewish Agencies and the
United Fund.
When President Johnson was in the White House, the club honored
Mrs. Johnson. Other distinguished honorees include former President
Truman, Senator Hugh Scott, Dr. Martin Luther King, John Cardinal
Krol, Ambassador Arthur Goldberg and Mrs. Nixon when she was First
Lady.
We sincerely hope, that since an advance booking for space is
required, we may have the honor of an early favorable reply.
Sincerely,
Frank Brodsky

Our nation's First Family--over the past 30 years--has been part of the
philanthropic history of Philadelphia's Golden Slipper Club of almost 700 business,
professional and community leaders.
From President Truman thru Mrs. Richard M. Nixon, a member of the
First Family has graced our dias.
It is with much honor that I inform you our Board of Governors has asked
me to invite you to accept the Golden Globe Humanitarian Award--the honor
received by President Harry S. Truman.
A black-tie dinner will be the setting on a day of your choice in late
January, February, or March 1976.
We will be pleased to work out the details with your delegated representative.
Your protocol staff is familiar with Golden Slipper and its charitable works.
They can fill you in on the many philanthropic activities which feature services

Dear Sheila,
It was good to hear from you-and I can well understand how busy you have been.
One only has to read the paper, or watch the news to see that you are doing
a super job.
At the moment, In addition to my consulting position with PARC, I find myself
happily and deeply involved with the President Ford Committee in Pennsylvania.
I am now co-ordinating our campaign "kick-off" which will be in the form of
a reception in honor of our local chairman. Our special guest for the event
will be Secretary of Transportation Coleman. In addition to my responsibility
for the execution of the event, and the program, I am handling the media
coverage. One question Sheila-how do you stay sane? I really haven't any
complaints though, I am enjoying every hectic, satisfying moment.
Due to the fact that our friends at Golden Slipper Club are the all time greatest
"news-leakers" I've been aware for sometime that Mrs. Ford will be visiting
Philadelphia on April 26th. Let me know if I can help you in any possible way.
I wish that it were last year at this time!

Dear Ms. Weidenfeld:
Our Program Chairman, Joseph H. Ball, suggested I follow
up your conversation with him by briefly informing you of the
Golden Slipper Club and its programs.
Golden Slipper is Philadelphia's prestigious fraternal
and philanthropic organization, comprised of business and
professional leaders in this community.
Our best known activity is our camp, consisting of 750
acres of prime land in Bartonsville, high in the Pocono Mountains.
It is designed to provide youngsters with a summer camping
experience, they might not ever have, due to economic problems.
Each year, more than 750 youngsters, regardless of race or
religion, attend one of the three, three-week encampments.
In the city, elder citizens, as well as children, partic-
ipate in the Club's programs. Last year about 3000 senior
citizens were provided with theater and other entertainment,
while the children were taken to sports events, swimming parties,
etc. Each year, almost 200 individual welfare and/or scholar-
ship benefits are provided through the Welfare Committee, who
step in quietly to provide quick and efficient help.
We are a "Do-It-Yourself" organization. We do not go to
the community for funds, rather our members contribute their
time and money to support our programs.
In previous years the Club has honored many prominent
people that include the late President Harry S. Truman, U.S.
Senator Robert Kennedy and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., as well
as Mrs. Lyndon Baines Johnson, Mrs. Richard M. Nixon, the Hon.

speak of is loyalty to a cause. And that
cause is Charity. Helping people help
themselves. And helping people who

to race, creed, color or religion. Good
Fellowship, Fraternalism and Friend-
ship are entities which Slipper mem-
bers share by together reaping the
GOOD
gratification of lending a hand to
humanity.
FELLOWSHIP
The Golden Slipper Club was
founded in 1920 by a small group
of men who shared the common
desire to do some good for their
fellow man. The membership in
the club slices through nearly
every walk of life and nearly
every social strata. The one com-
mon element of our members is
their willingness and desire to
help. To contribute their time and
their energy, and their dollars, so
that those less fortunate may be
treated to a little bit of happiness.
OUR CLUB
Each year over 700 youngsters
are sent to our camp in the
Pocono Mountains in Pennsyl-
vania for a vacation they other-
wise could not afford. Each year
many boys and girls are awarded
our scholarships so that they can
get the education they otherwise
may not have been able to ob-
tain. And each year countless
numbers of needy and deserving
"ДЕМ"
are helped in hundreds of ways
by our welfare activities. Plus a
productive new projects commit-
tee works year 'round, evaluating
the needs of the community to
see where our efforts can best be
placed.
Our founders would be proud to
see what has grown from the
seed they planted. With over 800
members and an active women's
group made up of wives of Slip-
per members, the work of the
Golden Slipper Club is expand-
ing by the day.
The Golden Slipper Camp,
founded in 1949, provides needy
youngsters of all colors and
creeds with the experience of
summer camping at its best. The
camp is situated on over 700
acres of scenic woodland in
Pennsylvania's majestic Pocono
Mountains, and its physical facil-
ities are on a par with the finest
private camps in the world.
There are three encampments

weeks duration, so that the max-
imum number of children can en-
joy all that the camp has to offer.
Boating, swimming, athletics and
a wide range of other activities
are all geared to helping boys
and girls develop physical skills,
self-confidence and self-reliance.
Our camp is also open in the
off-season, providing memorable
weekends for groups like the Big
Brothers, P.A.L., and the Boy
Scouts.
Most important is this: The
Golden Slipper Camp gives these
kids the experience of living to-
gether with others in a coopera-
tive environment and the experi-
ence of learning first-hand that
individual dignity, responsibility
and friendship transcend race or
color.
The activities of Golden Slipper, though diverse, all center
around providing help to deserving people through either
our camp, welfare or scholarship programs. But the word
"help" means many different things. It could mean granting
a scholarship to a youngster who has the brains and deter-
mination but no funds to put them to work. It could mean
providing food and shelter for an elderly couple unable to
provide for themselves. It could mean providing a home for
a youngster in our group home for "throwaway" children. It
could mean a program of aid and activity for "the forgotten
people" of our community
the aged. It could mean pro-
viding a summer vacation for 700 kids of all races and reli-
gions at our renowned summer camp. Or it could mean winter
camping for deserving groups.
It could mean taking a group of underprivileged kids to the
circus or a ball game. It could mean providing food baskets
for the hungry at Easter or Thanksgiving or Passover. It could
mean an evening of entertainment for a Veterans Hospital.
Or it could mean providing shelter for an entire family left
homeless.
All the charitable activities carried out by Slipper cost money.
Lots of money. And through the years, the call has always
been answered. Where does the money come from? Year after
year, Slipper members contribute their dollars. And year after
year, trust funds set up by various benefactors become avail-
able. Special events like theatre parties and sports outings
are held continually, with the proceeds going to Slipper chari-
ties. The Federation
ACTIVITIES
of Jewish Agencies,
in conjunction with
the United Fund, is a
source of substantial
funds each year. And there are the endless number of people
who graciously provide all the goods and services we need
to run our camp and welfare programs. Things from food,
clothing, recreation equipment and architectural services to
pots and pans and soap and paint.
We place no limits on the range of our activities. Simply be-
cause the need of our fellow man knows no bounds. We do
what we can, and we go where we're needed.

Background Sheet
GOLDEN SLIPPER CLUB
"People Serving People"
The Golden Slipper Club was founded 54 years ago to carry
on philanthropic activities.
Its best known activity is its 750 acre summer camp in the
Pocono Mountains. Each year about 750 boys and girls vacation
there in three encampments of three weeks each, enjoying outdoor
sports and adventure, as well as excellent food and proper rest.
In the city, elder citizens as well as children participate
in the Club's programs.
Last year about 3000 senior citizens were provided with
theater and other entertainments. The young set were taken to
sports events, swimming parties and such.
On a continuing, year-round basis, when individuals are in
need, the Club's Welfare Committee steps in quietly to provide
quick and efficient help. Each year, almost 200 individual welfare
and/or scholarship benefits are anonymously provided. Funds and
services come from members.
A "Do-It-Yourself" Organization, Golden Slipper is composed
of almost 700 business, professional and community leaders.
The organization has a national reputation for its
philanthropic activities.
Mrs. Ford's appearance is a continuing step in a succession
of Golden Slipper's personal relationships with members of our
nation's first families.
Mrs. Richard M. Nixon and Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson were pre-
viously Golden Slipper guests. Many members of the Eisenhower
family also have attended Golden Slipper functions, as has the
Honorable Harry S. Truman.
