Dear Mrs. Weidenfeld,
I am listing below the names of three "Virginia Gentlemen" who several of us feel
would be the top-notch choices of escorts for Miss Ford.
(1) Thursday Evening - Billy Pifer, 21 years old, 6 feet, a Junior
at Washington and Lee, plans to attend Medical
School, is great at tennis and skiing and is
the son of Dr. and Mrs. William Pifer (Father,
Chm. of Winchester Republican Party).
(2) Friday Evening
- Jim Robinson, 22 years old, 6 ft. 2 in.,
History Major at Madison, coaches swimming,
skiis, plays tennis and football and looks
and does most everything athletic, son of
Congressman and Mrs. J. Kenneth Robinson.
(3) Saturday Evening
-
David Kern, 22 years old, 5 ft. 11 in., Senior
at the University of North Carolina, History
Major and plans to attend Law School next year.
Phi Beta Kappa, Morehead Scholar, great tennis
player, likes all kinds of music and is the
son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kern (Father, Chief
Engineer at National Fruit Product Company)
These really are outstanding boys in personality, looks and just. generally all
around nice guys. If Miss Ford accepts these young men, would you let me know
as soon as possible, as they have exams and transportation arrangements to make.
I have also included her schedule and a map of Winchester showing where she will
be according to the schedule. I will be glad to answer any questions that may.
arise.
Everyone is getting very excited, praying for good weather and looking forward
to our new Queen. Will be in touch again soon.
Most sincerely,

Dear Susan,
I think this is a very nice invitation!
It is from a lady in Winchester, Virginia,
inviting you to drop by the new SPCA Animal
Shelter while you are in the area. As
she says, "It would really add such a human
touch to your reign as our Queen and mean
very much to the ordinary citizenry of
Winchester. " The only trouble is it might
be difficult to work in.

Drop by animal shelter if
Pete Sorum can work it into

Where the South Begins, at the Gateway to the Beautiful
Shenandoah Valley
Winchester was once Shawnee Indian camping ground to which
Pennsylvania Quakers came to settle in 1732.
The town was named Frederick Town after Frederick, father of
George III of England. In 1752 the name was changed to Win-
chester in honor of the ancient English capital.
In 1748, Thomas, Lord Fairfax, proprietor of a five-million acre
royal grant lived near White Post (12 miles from Winchester) until he
died in 1783. Having met George Washington at Belvoir, near Mt.
Vernon, he employed him to survey lands in what is now Frederick
County. During Washington's three years in this area he had his
office in a small building at the corner of Cork and Braddock Streets
in Winchester. This building still stands and is open to the public as
a museum.
During the French and Indian Wars, Winchester was a center of

Then, as now, Winchester was the hub of the finest highways -
arteries for the movement of troops and supplies.
In Confederate hands, Winchester guarded the rich farms of the
Shenandoah Valley which provided food for the Confederate armies
around Richmond. Winchester was a threat to Washington, and to
the roads, railroads and canals which connected the Union capital
with the mid-west.
