He and Tricia re-\nmained overnight to attend the Columbus Day\nParade.\nSeptember 27, 1976\nFORD & LIBRARY GERALD\nMEMORANDUM FOR:\nTOM ARANDA\nFROM:\nREY MADURO\nReference is made to your memo dated September fif-\nteenth along with attachments, regarding the possible\nparticipation of President Ford and/or Senator Dole\nat the Puerto Rican Congress of New Jersey annual\nconvention October 23, 1976.\nI have had a series of conversations regarding the\naforementioned matter with Reverend Alfonso Roman,\npresent Executive Director and Mr. Hector Rodriguez,\nthe former Executive Director.\nMr., Rodriguez had worked very closely with former\nGovernor Cahill of New Jersey during the Governor's\ntenure. Mr. Rodgiguez indicates that there is a strong\npossibility of the President being endorsed by the New\nJersey Puerto Rican Congress in the event President\nFord or Senator Dole were to appear on the October\ntwenty-third date.\nI strongly endorse the participation of Senator Dole\nat this convention because of its location and the fact\nthat neither Governor Carter or Senator Mondale have\nappeared before a Puerto Rican group on the East coast.\nOn this date I had a conversation with Reverend Roman\nindicating that on Wednesday, September twenty-ninth, he\nwas meeting with Carter representatives in order to as-\ncertain participation from the Democratic Party. Along\nthese same lines Reverend Roman has indicated that New\nYork State Senator Robert Garcia was also addressing a\ngroup.\nThe site of the convention would attract Hispanics\n(majority Puerto Ricans) from the Philadelphia, New\nJersey and New York area.\n2\nAgain, I strongly support participation of Senator Dole\nat this Convention.\nCC: B.
