Ford Presidential Library\n8:50PM-10:43PM\nept. 30, 1974\nPOOL REPORT\nPresident Visits Wife Betty at Bethesda\nPresident Ford ate dinner and then departed the\nWhite House through the South Diplomatic Entrance at\n8:21PM. He was accompanied by Don Rumsfeld.\nMotorcade led by single park police car crossed\nTheodore Roosevelt Bridge and took the George Washington\nParkway to the Beltway and then to the Naval Hospital\narriving at apprEximately 8:30 PM.\nThe president spoke briefly with waiting reporters.\nHe said: \"They (the doctors) told me what the\nannouncement was that was published. And it's I think\ngood but there are also some questions raised and we're\ngoing to do whatever the doctors advise.'\nHe said, in answer to a question whether he is\noptimistic: \"I certainly am. Because, uh, I think\nthey're the experts. We'll follow their advice. And\nwith her strong, fine attitude I think everything will\nwork out all right.\"\nAbout an hour and 15 minutes later, the president\nemerged from the hospital. He appeared red-eyed and tired.\nBut he offered a cheerful \"good evening\" to the waiting\nreporters.\n(more)\n-2- -\nIt was 10:13PM.\nHe said: \"She was feeling much, much better.\nShe had some liquid. she sat up. she had been up today\nand it was a great improvement and she gave me a hard time about\na couple of things so she must be feeling better. \"\nThe president was asked if Mrs. Ford had complained\nabout his not visiting earlier.\nHe answered: \"No, she understood I had a number\nof things I had to talk about at the office and work on\n\"\nAsked the basis of his optimism, the president\nanswered: \"They told me the same thing they told all\nof you and that information is optimistic as far as I am\nconcerned. She feels great. \"\nAsked if he's set a date for his appearance before\nthe Hungate Subcommittee, the president declined to answer\nand moved to his car.\nThe motorcade retraced its path and arrived at the\nWhite House at 10:43PM.\nRumsfeld and the president spoke briefly outside\nthe limousine before going inside the White House.\n(The president carried two gifts--we were told they\nwere from \"friends\" and not told what they were--to Mrs.\nFord, in addition to a card from the Secret Service).\nJim McManus\nWestinghouse Broadcasting\n-0-"
