THE WHITE HOUSE
WASHINGTON
October 2, 1974
Dear Mr. President:
It is with a deep personal sense of gratitude for the opportunity of having
been able to serve the Nation that I am submitting today my resignation as
Deputy Special Assistant to the President, effective October 15, 1974.
Three years and three months ago, when I entered the Federal Government,
it was with the hope that some small contribution on my part might be made
to the civic good. Since that time, I have drawn special gratification from
two overseas assignments, in 1972 and 1973, when I reported on refugee
problems, disaster relief and other human afflictions of peoples less
materially fortunate than we Americans.
I also take particular satisfaction in my work for your predecessor - whose
achievements for the Nation and the world will live on in history - at the
time when he was facing personal adversity and when the effects of that
strain were being felt by the Nation.
During the period of transition, the graciousness that you have personally
shown to the aides of the former President has been deeply appreciated.
Under your Presidency, I am confident, the Republic will prosper, as we
advance to our Bicentennial. You have already plowed straight and deep,
and the people trust your leadership.
If there is any future service I can render, I stand ready to assist. My
continuing prayers and warmest good wishes are with you and with your
gallant wife whose convalescence, I pray to God, will be swift and complete.
