Ford Presidential Library\nFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE\nJANUARY 18, 1975\nOffice of the White House Press Secretary\nTHE WHITE HOUSE\nThe President today declared an emergency for the State of Mississippi\nas a result of tornadoes, beginning about January 10, 1975, which caused\nwidespread and extensive damage to public and private property. The\nPresident's action will permit the use of Federal funds in relief and\nrecovery efforts in designated areas of the State.\nFederal assistance from the President's Disaster Relief Fund will include\ntemporary housing accommodations for families whose homes were\ndestroyed or seriously damaged. The Administrator of the Small Business\nAdministration is designating the affected areas as eligible for low-interest\nrate disaster loan assistance. The Department of Agriculture is surveying\nthe affected areas to determine what assistance it can make available under\nits own authorities.\nFederal relief activities in Mississippi will be coordinated by the Federal\nDisaster Assistance Administration, Department of Housing and Urban\nDevelopment, under the direction of Administrator Thomas P. Dunne.\nMr. Dunne will designate the specific areas within the State eligible for\nFederal assistance, based upon Federal and State damage assessments.\nMr. Thomas P. Credle, Regional Director of the Federal Disaster\nAssistance Administration, HUD Region IV, will be designated as the\nFederal Coordinating Officer to work with the State in providing emergency\nassistance under the Disaster Relief Act of 1974, Public Law 93-288.\n#\n#\n#"
