Ford Presidential Library FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MARCH 8, 1975 Office of the White House Press Secretary THE WHITE HOUSE The President today announced his intention to nominate Laurence W. Lane, Jr., of Portola Valley, California, to the rank of Ambassador following his appointment as Commissioner General of the International Ocean Exposition. As Commissioner General, Mr. Lane, 55, will represent the United States at the First International Ocean Exposition, which will be held in Okinawa from July 20, 1975, to January 18, 1976. Forty countries will be participating in the exposition, which is sponsored by the government of Japan. Mr. Lane's appointment as Commissioner General was made yesterday by the Acting Director of the United States Information Agency, Eugene Kopp. A native of Des Moines, Iowa, Mr. Lane is a graduate of Stanford University and is the chairman of the board of Lane Publishing Company which publishes Sunset Magazine. He has served on numerous advisory committees and is particularly involved in matters related to the Pacific Ocean. They include membership in the California Delegation on Japan-California Association and the United States Committee of the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council. He also served on the President's National Advisory Commission on Oceans and Atmosphere. Mr. Lane is married and has two children. # # #
