Ford Presidential Library\nFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE\nApril 8, 1975\nOffice of the White House Press Secretary\nTHE WHITE HOUSE\nThe President announced today a milestone achievement in\nthe Legacy of Parks Program.\nWith the transfer of 39 additional parcels of Federal\nland located in 22 states, a grand total of 521 properties\nhave now been conveyed, at no cost, to cities, counties and\nstates for parks, recreation and wildlife purposes.\nThe Legacy of Parks program, under the direction of the\nFederal Property Council, was initiated in 1971 with the first\ncost-free transfer of $11.1 million worth of Federal property\nto the County of Nassau, New York.\nSince that time, surplus Federal land has been conveyed\nto all 50 states, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, the\nVirgin Islands and the District of Columbia. The 521 properties\nrepresent a total of 73,788 acres with a market value estimated\nat $208,751,176.00.\n\"I take particular pride,' the President said, in this\nprogram that returns resources and decisions back to the people\nand provides recreational facilities close to where people\nlive.\"\nA survey shows, President Ford pointed out, that 70% of\nthe surplus Federal land transferred to local governments under\nthe Legacy of Parks program is located in or near urban areas,\nthus making it possible for families to conserve fuel energy\nby using public transportation or driving very short distances\nto reach parks, playgrounds, picnic areas and other recreation\nsites. It is projected that, when fully developed, 70 million\npeople will use and enjoy these park lands annually.\nIncluded in the 39 properties announced today are one in\nArizona, California, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Maine,\nMaryland, Michigan, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, Ohio,\nRhode Island, Utah, and Wisconsin; two in Missouri, Montana,\nand Washington; three in Kansas and Mississippi;
