Ford Presidential Library FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE APRIL 21, 1975 Office of the White House Press Secretary THE WHITE HOUSE The President today announced his intention to nominate Donald Sharp Frederickson, of Bethesda, Maryland, to be Director of the National Institutes of Health, Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. He will succeed Robert S. Stone who resigned effective January 31, 1975. Since 1974, Dr. Frederickson has been the President of the Institutes of Medicine, Washington, D. C. He was associated with the National Heart and Lung Institute from 1953 until 1974, serving as Clinical Associate, and late a member of the Senior Research Staff of the Laboratory of Cellular Physiology and Metabolism. He became Clinical Director of the Institute in 1961 and then Head, of the Section on Molecular Diseases in the Laboratory of Metabolism in 1962. In 1966 he became the Director of the National Heart and Lung Institute. During the period from 1966 to 1974, he was the Chief of the Molecular Disease Branch of the Institute and later the Director of Intramural Research. Dr. Frederickson was born on August 8, 1924, in Canon City, Colorado. He received his B. S degree from the University of Colorado in 1946 and his M.D. degree from the University of Michigan in 1949. Dr. Frederickson is married to the former Henrietta Eekhof and they have two children. ###
