NOTICE TO THE PRESS
President Ford met with President Leopold S. Senghor of the Republic
of Senegal at 10:30 a. m. today. The meeting lasted one hour. Attending
the meeting with the Presidents were Senegal's Minister of Foreign
Affairs Assane Seck; Ambassador to the United States Andre Coulbary;
General Scowcroft; and U. S. Ambassador to Senegal O. Rudolph Aggrey.
The President, who had not met previously with President Senghor,
extended to him a warm welcome to the United States. They took this
opportunity to exchange views on world issues and to discuss developments
in Africa.
The President expressed to President Senghor our support for the coming
independence of the former Portuguese territories of Mozambique, Angola,
Cape Verde, and Sao Tome-Principe.
Among the broader issues discussed were raw materials, energy, and the
Middle East.
The meeting also included a review of our bilateral relations with Senegal,
which are excellent, with emphasis on economic assistance, particularly
with regard to the drought that is affecting Senegal, as well as other
African states in the Sahel.
President Ford will host President Senghor at a working lunch in the
White House at 1:00 p.m. today.
