(Rome Time)\nPresident Leone, Mr. Prime Minister, Your\nExcellencies:\nUpon our departure from Italy, Mrs. Ford and\nI wish to express our profound gratitude to -President\nand Mrs. Leone, to Prime Minister and Mrs. Moro, and\nto the Italian Government and the Italian people for\nthe wonderful reception accorded us on this occasion\nand this visit.\nThe warmth with which we have been received,\nthe cordial and productive discussionsthat I have had\nwith your highest leaders, and the friendship and good\nwill expressed everywhere for the United States has made\nthis a memorable experience for all of us.\nFor over a quarter of a century, Italy and the\nUnited States have had a remarkable identity of purpose\nin working as democracies with shared ideals toward the\ngoals of an enduring peace and prosperity for our people.\nWe have worked together as allies in NATO to\npreserve peace and to assure stability in Europe and in\nthe Mediterranean. We can take satisfaction in the successes\nwe have achieved.\nAs a result of my many meetings here in Rome,\nI am confident that the United States and Italy together,\nas partners in the Atlantic Alliance, will enjoy similar\nsuccess in meeting the complex and difficult challenges\nbefore us.\nIn this way, we can contribute to the prospects of\na peaceful and prosperous life for the people throughout\nthe world.\nOn behalf of Mrs. Ford and myself, you have our\nsincere thanks, our deepest appreciation for the hospitality\nand the many kindnesses extended to us at all levels\nduring every moment of our stay.\nMORE\nPage 2\nAs we prepare to leave this beautiful\ncountry, I am reminded of the saying that fond memories\nspare departures for final sorrow. Thus, we cannot\nleave Italy in sorrow, for we carry far too many warm\nmemories of a very special day with gracious friends.\nI thank you.\nPRESIDENT LEONE: Mr. President, upon your\ndeparture, I should like once again to say to you\nand Mrs. Ford how pleased we are to have had this\nopportunity of meeting you again.\nThe intensive and fruitful talks that I,\nPrime Minister Moro and other members of the Italian\nGovernment have had with you and Dr. Kissinger have\nonce again concerned the friendly, constructive and\nfirm spirit with which our two countries are facing,\nthe problems which concern them both on the bilateral\nand the general plane.\nYour trip to Europe, in which you so oppor-\ntunely included this short visit to Rome, has been of\ngreat importance. The Brussels summit in particular\nhas shown the vitality of the Alliance. This is a\nguarantee of our collective security and also an\nessential condition for detente and peace.\nOur talks today have concerned the existence\nof a full agreement of views on this essential point\nand the common wish to seek the solution of problems\nrelating to peace and to political and economic stability\nin Europe and in the Mediterranean, in particular. and\nin the Middle East area, as well as those problems of a\nglobal dimension, which are characteristic of our ties.\nThank you for the kind words you have just\nsaid and the words you have just said and for the lofty\nthings you said about my country. I thank you again\nfor the good will that you have displayed to us.
