Ford Presidential Library\nPOOL REPORT\nAndrews AFB - Detroit\nOctober 10\n1975\nAfter an uneventful takeoff in overcast at 2:12 pm, Nessen\ncame back to report the following:\nThe President's opening statement at the news conference will\ndeal with grain, \"but not in the way you think.\" He denied\nthat the President will announce a grain deal with the USSR.\nThe President's meeting with Norwegian King Olaf lasted 40\nminutes, dealt with 150th anniversary of Norwegian immigration,\nplus exchange of greetings.\nPresident's meeting with Portugese Foreign Minister Nelo Antunes\nand Portugese Ambassador Joao Hill Themido lasted 45 minutes,\nwas also attended by Secretary Kissinger and General Scowcroft.\nMeeting was a continuation of \"high level consultations\" begun\nlast October when Portugese President Francisco Costa Gomes\nvisited Washington. Meeting consisted of a general review\nof US-Portugese relations. On the current situation in\nPortugal, discussed Portugese needs for US aid, plus relief\nand resettlement assistance for Angolan refugees. President\ntold Antunes Administration will send Congress a proposed\nassistance program which will include (ON BACKGROUND)\n$55 million in fiscal 1976 ($35 millionfor immediate relief,\n$20 million in long-term assistance. Also agree to double\nU.S. airlift from Angola, starting October 14. (ALL THE\nPORTUGESE MEETING WAS REPORTED AT WHITE HOUSE BY LARRY SPEAKS.)\nRiding on Air Force One were Mrs. Ford and the following\nMichigan Republicans: Senator and Mrs. Robert P. Griffin and\nReps. Garry Brown, Ed Hutchinson (and Mrs.); Guy Vander Jage\n(and Mrs.); Marvin Esch (and Mrs.) and MRS. Al Cederberg.\nStaffers on Air Force One: Seidman, Cheney, Hartmann, Nessen,\nJames Connor.\nAsked if President plans other stops in Europe, Nessen replied:\n\"I don't have anything on that,\" then said the President\n\"has to get back in time to leave\" (for China?)\nForrest Boyd\nDon Irwin\n#\n#\n#"
