Ford Presidential Library\nFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE\nNOVEMBER 29, 1975\nOFFICE OF TUE WHITE HOUSE PRESS SECRETARY\nTHE WHITE HOUSE\nREMARKS OF THE PRESIDENT\nUPON HIS DEPARTURE\nFOR THE PACIFIC BASIN\nANDREWS AIR FORCE BASE\n8:10 A.M. EST\nGood morning:\nThree times in our generation, wars in Asia disturbed\nthe peace of the world and drew America into serious conflict.\nOn this Thanksgiving weekend, we give thanks that America --\nand Asia -- are at peace.\nToday I begin a mission to Asia to consolidate that\npeace and to visit our two newest States, Alaska and Hawaii,\nwhich are most mindful of the importance of peace in the\nPacific.\nI am traveling to the People's Republic of China to\nstrengthen our new relationship with the great nation from whom\nwe were isolated, in mutual suspicion, for almost a quarter of\na century. Stability in Asia and international security benefit\nfrom this new relationship of mutual respect that we are\ndeveloping between the United States and the People's Republic\nof China. We will stand for our own views, as we always have.\nBut we will seek, in the American tradition, to foster mutual\nunderstanding.\nI will also visit two important friends in Asia:\nthe Philippines, one of our oldest partners, an ally which\nsymbolizes America's historic link and commitment to Asia, and\nIndonesia, a nation of 120 million people, a good friend of the\nUnited States, and a country of tremendous potential and\nimportance.\nAs I did last year on my visits to Japan and the\nRepublic of Korea, I will reaffirm America's undiminished\ninterest in the security and the well-being of Asia. That\nvast region is of vital importance to us and to the world.\nI will bring to the people of Asia the good wishes and\nthe friendship of the American people.\nThank you very, very much.\nEND\n(AT 8:03 P.M.
