Ford Presidential Library\nFebruary 20, 1976\nPOOL REPORT #8 - TRAVEL POOL DOVER HIGH SCHOOL TO PFC\nSTOREFRONT OFFICE TO RAMADA INN\nShortly after 11 o'clock we got over to the Ford Storefront\nHeadquarters where the President worked the crowd for\nabout three minutes. There were several hundred fairly\nenthusiastic people outside.\nHe then went inside where the Ford campaign people have\none part of a building that is really an insurance, real\nestate and travel agency enterprise. There he met a 92-\nyear-old woman, Miss Leonora Bates. She has been a\nRepublican all her life, had seen just one of the\nPresidents of the United States, and that was Grover\nCleveland. At 92 Miss Bates lives in her own home, does\nmost of her housework. She follows the political campaigns\nwith verve and is a staunch supporter of President Ford.\nGiven 20 minutes notice that Ford was coming she put on a\nnew hat and coat and came over to the headquarters to get\na glimpse of the President, who introduced her to Mrs. Ford\nsaying, \"Look, Betty, here is somebody that is 92 years\nold.\"\nHe then went into the telephone center. It is a very small\none. I hate to refer to it as a row of telephone banks\nbecause there weren't that many phones in the room -- seven.\nWhile there one of the Ford workers called Mrs. Katherine\nPeyser. She lives on Miller Avenue in Portsmouth. She\nwas 90 years old today. She is the widow of, we believe\nhe was a municipal judge -- we know he is not a Federal\nJudge -- Harry Peyser, and she was told that \"the President\nof the United States would like to speak to you,\" and Ford\ngot on the phone and said basically that he was glad that\nshe is 90 years old, wishes her many more, and after he\ntalked to her for a while -- and she was pretty talkative\nherself -- he tried to say, \"Okay, well here is Betty.\" And\nthen she kept talking and then he said, \"Am I really\nGerald?\" and then he said yes, and there was much laughter.\nHe said, \"You sound pretty spry to me. Well we are all\nso happy to know you have had 90 very nice, wonderful years.\"\nThen he got off the phone and handed it to Mrs. Ford and\nthe President just kind of turned to us and the people in\ngeneral and said, \"She sounds like a very vigorous, spry\nlady.\" Then Mrs. Ford spoke with her.\nThe President then started talking to his campaign workers,\ngave his usual pitch on the economy, referred to Hubert\nHumphrey's remarks yesterday, optimistic remarks about\nthe economy, brought up the new CPI figures and said that\n\"I know that we will not disappoint you. We will do a\nfirst class job for you and the country, and that is what\nit is all about.\nMORE\n- 2 -\nAs they were about to leave a woman started complimenting\nMrs. Ford for supporting the President so much. This woman's\nname is Linda Hendricks Fry. She is running for Governor\nin Maine -- she is running for the Republican nomination --\nand when she told Mrs. Ford that Mrs. Ford said, \"Right on.\"\nThe President then went out and worked the crowd again, this\ntime for about five minutes.\nOver at the headquarters as Ford walked out he was talking\nto an old fellow named Lew Titus, who had several times\ninvited the President to come up to play golf with him\nto the extent the President finally suggested that Lew\nmust be a hustler. On his way out Lew intercepted Mrs. Ford\nand told her, \"You are keeping your husband dressed real\nnice. He looks very good today.\"\nFrom there he went down to the Ramada Inn where this\nluncheon is being held. Henry Cabot Lodge was outside to\nmeet the President before they went into the room. It is\njust a standard motel and they went directly into the room\nand not through a lobby or anything. The people attending\nthe lunch, in addition to the President and Henry Cabot\nLodge, were former Governor Walter Peterson, Stu Spencer,\nRogers Morton, Representative Jim Cleveland, who is the\ncampaign manager in the State, and John Michels, who is\nthe campaign director -- whatever the distinction is -- and\nJack Marsh.\nNessen didn't know if Lodge is supporting Ford but I\nassume they are bringing him out for a news conference,\nthat he probably is, but we don't know that for a fact.\nThe TV people and radio people should know we have no\nfootage inside the storefront headquarters. None of the\nstuff -- Ford talking to this woman who had the birthday --\nbecause of space limitations only the writing pool was\nallowed inside.
