THE WHITE HOUSE
The President today announced his intention to nominate John Conyers
Read, of Reston, Virginia, to be an Assistant Secretary of Labor. He
will succeed Paul Fasser, Jr., who resigned effective April 1, 1976. Upon
confirmation by the Senate, the Secretary of Labor will designate Mr. Read's
area of responsibility as Employment Standards. He has been Counselor
to the Secretary of Labor since March 1975.
Mr. Read was born on May 21, 1947, in New York, New York. He attended
Harvard College and received his A.B. degree in 1969 and his M.B.A. from
Harvard Business School in 1971.
In July 1971, Mr. Read became an Operations Research Analyst in the.
Department of Health, Education and Welfa From April 1973 to June
1974, he was Executive Assistant to the Director of the Cost of Living
Council. He became an Economic Advisor to the Governor of Massachusetts
in July 1974, prior to joining the Department of Labor in 1975.
Mr. Read is married to the former Alexandra Gould and they have three
children.
