GRAND RAPIDS TO SAGINAW AND
MOTORCADE TO SHERWOOD ELEMEN TARY SCHOOL
The flight from Grand Rapids to Saginaw and the motorcade from the
Saginaw airport to the Sherwood elementary school were uneventful.
Nessen said aboard Air Force One that the President was advised upon
arising this morning that he had secured the editorial support of ten
additional Michigan newspapers. "As far as we know, no newspaper
has endorsed Reagan," Nessen said.
Backtrack a bit on the subject of newspapers: Nessen compained to the
pool earlier today about what he said were ten of the first eleven
paragraphs of the Detroit Free Press this morning, specifically those
paragraphs dealing with the shout and Presidential response. Nessen
said that other White House aides shared his criticism that the paper
had taken a minor incident out of proportion.
On predictions aboard Air Force One, Nessen said that Mr. Ford is
predicting victory, but not a percentage thereof. "It is hard to tell
because it is a totally open primary," Nessen said.
You are aware that the President responded to a few questions at
Saginaw airport, and then shook hands along the fence, as did Mrs. Ford
and Susan Ford, before the motorcade.
