Ford Presidential Library\nFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE\nJULY 19, 1976\nOffice of the White House Press Sec etary\nTHE WHITE HOUSE\nSTATEMENT BY THE PRESIDENT\nI am today announcing my intention to convene the\nWhite House Conference on Library and Information Services\nprovided for in Public Law 93-568. Realization of the full\npotential of this conference lies in the hands of dedicated\nprofessionals working day to day in this area. These\nindividuals will make the White House Conference on\nLibraries and Information Services a successful and\nproductive event.\nThe challenge confronting those who provide information\nservices to the public is one of harnessing modern technology.\nTelecommunications, computers, and micrographics must be\nfurther employed to reduce the costs of making information\nmore widely accessible and improving the speed and accuracy\nwith which source materials can be supplied. The librarian\nof today's space age serves a profession and a public more\ndemanding and exacting than ever before.\nWithin the next few months I will request from the\nCongress the appropriations necessary to fund the conference\nand announce my appointments for the Advisory Committee to\nthe White House Conference on Libraries and Information\nServices. It is my hope that the White House Conference\non Library and Information Services will through its State,\nterritorial and national assemblies provide the impetus for\nadvancing the quality of America's informational services.\n#####"
