THE WHITE HOUSE
The President today announced his intention to nominate Patricia M. Byrne,
of South Euclid, Ohio, to be Ambassador to the Republic of Mali. She
will succeed Ralph J. McGuire who has resigned. Miss Byrne has been
attending the Senior Seminar in Foreign Policy at the Foreign Service
Institute after having been Deputy Chief of Mission in Colombo from
1973 to 1975.
Born on June 1, 1925, in Cleveland, Ohio, Miss Byrne received her A.B.
degree in 1946 from Vassar College and her M.A. from the School of
Advanced International Studies at John Hopkins University in 1947.
During 1948-49, Miss Byrne was Information and Editorial Specialist
for the Central Intelligence Agency and from 1949 to 1952, she was a
Junior Foreign Service Officer in Athens. She was assigned to Saigon
in 1952 as a Political Officer and later in 1955 returned to the Department
of State as an International Relations Officer. She became Officer in
Charge for Laos Affairs at the Department during 1957-58, and was a
Consular Officer in Izmir from 1958 to 1960. She was stationed in
Ankara as a Political Officer from 1960 to 1961, and later as a Political
Officer in Vientiane from 1962 to 1963. From 1964 to 1966, Miss Byrne
was Foreign Affairs Officer, Officer in Charge of Dependent Area Affairs
and Officer in Charge of United Nations Political Affairs at the Department
of State. She was a Supervisory Personnel Specialist, serving as Chief
of East Asia Personnel during 1966-67 at the State Department.
In 1967, Miss Byrne was named Special Assistant to Deputy Under Secretary
for Administration at the State Department and attended the National War
College during 1968-69. From 1969 to 1972, she was Policital Officer in
Paris.
Miss Byrne resides in the District of Columbia.
