NOTICE TO THE PRESS
The President today announced his intention to nominate Herschel Schacter,
of Bronx, New York, to be a member of the Commission on Civil Rights.
He will succeed Robert S. Rankin, who is deceased.
Rabbi Schacter has been Rabbi of the Mosholu Jewish Center in Bronx,
New York since 1964.
Born on October 10, 1917, in Brooklyn, New York, Rabbi Schacter attended
Yeshiva University where he received his B.A. and D.D. degrees.
The Commission on Civil Rights is to encourage constructive steps toward
equal opportunity for minority groups and women. The Commission submits
recommendations to the President and the Congress and evaluates Federal
laws and the effectiveness of Government equal opportunity programs.
