at 10:45 am ford appeared in lobby, no introductions, no staff
men or rush of agents. Somber but frén dly, shook hands all over
lobby, with emoloyes of hotel, Mrs. Ford withhim.
ouside small coowd applauded and che ered him. He waved and clasped
hands over head in response.
En roote airport, small clusters of people along the curbs, waving
as car with Prez and Mrs. Ford passed. He waved back but this time
the talking car was silent.
At 11:15 am arrived airport went in the terminal bldg for unveil-
ing. You heard audio piped in. An 8 by 18 foot mural done by black
artist Paul Collins----like a family photo album sh depicting
ford as football venter, as Eagle Scout, his chiddred and his
mother holding him as a baby, his Model T in front of his frame
home. Also Grand Rapids Fress hedaline: "Ford Becomes President"
plus a scene showing the young marrieds, Betty and Jerry, en route
to Congress. As Rep. Guy Vandrrjack described the scenes Ford, sit-
ting in dgage pursed his lips, fought back tears and at one point
wiped his eyes with back of his wrist
When Prez said in his remarks, mentioned the gural meant much to
him because of his father and mother he fought back tears, his
voice broke and he almost lost his composure. After the unveil-
ing, Frez worked a fairly large crowd at the airport, shaking hands
and easuallyb taking his time. Airborne 40 minutes late.
Nessen came back to syy most of sanior staff would take off till
Sam 7 ot 8 pm tonigat. Said a bus woukd be laid on to transport
reporters from White House to Cheraton Park hotel. Fords plan
a dünner which will includes the Doles. Tomor row's schedule de-
pends on how long the night is. Formang purposes, off record
Palm Springs trip set for "Saturday or Sunday." Greeting by staff
on south lawn expected when Fords arrive; open coverage.
