Blakeman Deputy Assistant to the President For Appointments and Scheduling FROM: Karl Rove Assistant to the President and Senior Advisor REQUEST: Movie night PURPOSE: Movie screening of HBO Films new baseball movie 61*. BACKGROUND: 61*, an HBO docudrama about the amazing 1961 race between Yankees Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle to topple Babe Ruth's mythic 60-home run record. When it was over, Maris had beaten Ruth's record by hitting his 61st homer on the final day of the season. Meanwhile, Mantle finished with 54 home runs after missing several games at the end of the season because of illness. The movie's title also recalls the controversial asterisk attached to Maris' record by baseball commissioner Ford Frick. The American League had expanded its season to 162 games by 1961, up from the 154 games played in Ruth's day.
