The Terrible Hours
A new film
May 23ʳᵈ 1939 Americas newest attack sub,
the Squalus is on its final test dive before it is
committed to service. In the midst of the dive a
catastrophic failure of the main air induction
tanks occurs, sending ship and crew to a depth
of 240 feet. Miraculously 33 members of the
crew survive.
In the history of submarines no one has ever
rescued a crew from this depth. One man stands
to change that mark and in the process Naval
history. His name is Swede Momsen a
combination of visionary, scientist, and man of
action. Momsen has only a matter of hours to
locate the ship and rescue the men before they
succumb.
The Terrible Hours is a chronicle of
Momsen's struggle to rescue the men using
unproven technology and raw courage.

PURPOSE:
Movie screening of HBO Films new baseball movie 61*.
BACKGROUND:
61*, an HBO docudrama about the amazing 1961 race
between Yankees Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle to
topple Babe Ruth's mythic 60-home run record.
When it was over, Maris had beaten Ruth's record by
hitting his 61st homer on the final day of the season.
Meanwhile, Mantle finished with 54 home runs after
missing several games at the end of the season because of
illness.
The movie's title also recalls the controversial asterisk
attached to Maris' record by baseball commissioner Ford
Frick. The American League had expanded its season to
162 games by 1961, up from the 154 games played in
Ruth's day.
