George E. Wson Impeached in the Senator
Mitcell Land Fraud Cases.
WASHINGTO t Aug. 26.-Special Inspector
George F. Wilson of. the Interior Depart-
ment was dismissed to-day by Secretary
Hitchcock on account of disclosures made
during the investigation of the charges
against Senator Mitchell of Oregon.
Some of the witnesses examined during
that investigation testified that Wilson had
promised for a consideration to make
favorable recommendation in some land
cases in which they were interested, one of
them declaring Wilson had been paid $200
in one instance.
Wilgon admitted to the authorities that
he had received the money, but declared
that he had taken it to entrap the man,
and the amount was to be returned to him.
This explanation was not considered satis-
factory, and Wilson was removed. He was
appointed from Rhode Island.
