Golf Grounds of Independence Country Club RECREATION AND RE-CREA TION The Play Instinct is Recognized and Pleasing Facilities are Provided For the Physical Relaxation of Both Old and Young The play instinct has been implanted in every human being. How childhood days are made joyous by giving expression to this urge! How life is brightened by the ringing laughter of playing children! What a tragedy takes place in us when with advancing years and cares of life this instinct is permitted to be crushed out. Independence has splendid facilities for catering to the recreational requirements of all classes. MOVING PICTURE THEATRES-Independence has two well-equipped moving picture theatres, one with a seating capacity of 800, and the other with a seating capacity of 520. MEMORIAL HALL, located two blocks west of the public square, contains a gymnasium which affords fine facilities in which can be developed a community spirit. It is an ideal place for dramatics, dances, athletic activities, etc. THE CAMPUS, five blocks southwest of the square, is used by the community for base ball, tennis, basket ball, croquet, wading pool, picnics, and moving pictures. Saturday evening during the summer there is an attendance of from four to six thousand people to witness censored moving pietures. THE HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC FIELD is located in the northern part of the town where rugged young manhood measures skill and strength with worthy contenders. On this field a sense of fair-play is developed and the nation's rulers of tomorrow learn to practice self-control. THE SALVATION ARMY CAMP is located on the Lee's Summit road and Highway No. 40, adjacent to Independence. It consists of 18 acres where are located 24 cottages and a dining-hall. There is a swimming pool 25x60 feet. Swings, chutes, wading-pools, etc. are some of the equipment of the camp. THE INDEPENDENCE COUNTRY CLUB has a beautiful golf links embracing 86 acres on the Sheley road. It is owned by the Independence Land and Development Company, which was composed of 60 charter members of the club, now numbering 110 members. It was organized five years ago. THE TARARA CLUB DRUM CORPS was organized four years ago, the first of its kind in Inde- pendence. It is largely a community affair, composed of Shriners. The thirty-three members have traveled over the country, and in California in 1925 they received the highest honors. THE BITTERSWEET CAMP, located north of Independence at Dickinson Lakes, is fostered by the Jewish people. It gives children the advantage of invigorating, outdoor life and recreation, healthful food, and rest. SWIMMING POOLS-The nearest river is several miles away. We can not boast of even a handy babbling brook with the old "swimming hole". But we can and do boast of two pools. There is a modern swimming pool in the west part of town, and a lake in the southeast part of the city.
