400 mg. sodium (1 Gm. NaCI) is Diet Outline and Food Lists For Date The most important feature of this diet is that the amount of sodium is extremely low. The major source of sodium for the average person is common salt (sodium chloride). Hence while you are on this diet you should not add any salt to your food. In addition, there are other important sources of sodium which must be avoided. SOURCES OF SODIUM TO BE AVOIDED I. Salt, both at the table and in cooking and preparing food. II. Commercially processed foods to which salt has been added. These include: 1. Smoked, salt-cured and other processed meats, such as ham, bacon, salt pork, sausages, corned beef, salt fish, canned meats and fish, bouillon cubes and meat extracts. 2. Cheese. 3. Pickled and spiced products, such as olives, pickles, catchup, sauces, salad dressings and prepared mustard. 4. Canned vegetables, soups, meats and fish. 5. Salted butter, margarine and other salted fats. (4 squares only of salted butter or margarine allowed daily.) 6. Ordinary bakery goods and crackers (see list 4 for substitutes). 7. Many prepared cereals (see list 3 for cereals that may be used). 8. All other salted foods, such as pretzels, potato chips, popcorn, salted nuts, and most candies and candy bars. III. Foods with a high natural salt content: meat, eggs and milk. Meat and eggs may be eaten in limited amounts (see list 1). Milk should be replaced by Lonalac (see list 2). IV. "Soda" products, such as baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and baking powder, and self-rising flours, including pancake, biscuit, muffin and cake mixes; also various laxatives and other remedies containing "salts.' (Consult me before taking any medicine.) V. Water treated in water-softening equipment. 1
