LOW SODIUM DIET (200 mg NA)
NARA
12-6-48
The purpose of this diet is to reduce the amount of sodium eaten to as
low a level as is practical and at the same time to allow sufficient amount of
food to maintain a constant weight.
Sodiun is present in many substances of which common table salt (sodium
chloride) and balcing soda (sodium bicarbonate) are most frequently encountered.
Because there are no foods absolutely free of sodium, this diet is com-
posed of substances whose sodium content is relatively low. Thus, if an excess of
the foods in this diet is eaten, the amount of sodium will be increased.
In view of the fact that innumerable medicines (Alka-Seltzer, Sodium
Bromide, Laxatives, Sedatives, etc.) contain sodium, it is wise for you to take
no
medicine unless it is prescribed by your physician. One small dose of a medicine
may contain more sodium than would be included in several days of your diet.
Foods for the day's diet are to be selected from those listed below. If
each item is carefully weighed or measured, the diet will contain approximately 200
milligrans of sodium. No salt, soda, or baking powder is to be used in the prepara-
tion of any food nor is any salt to be added at the table.
The diet, without the butter and sugar, contains approximately 1300 cal-
ories. Since neither of these foods contain sodium, they should be added in amounts
to obtain the desired calories for the day's diet. The amount of these substances
that can be included from a practical point of view is limited. It is not feasible
to include more than 8 tablespoons of butter and 4 tablespoons of sugar. If this
amount ia included, the diet will contain 2500 calories.
Milk is not included on this very low sodium diet, because it contains 50
mg.
%
of
sodium. Obviously, a single glass of milk contains 100 mg. of sodium.
Include daily:
5 ounces of any one of the following -
Beef
Veal
Fish (fresh - unsalted)
Chicken
Rabbit
Bass
Turkey
Pork
Trout
Lamb
Venison
Halibut
Mutton
Sweetbreads
Cod
Egg - one
Eggs, due to their relatively high sodium content, cannot replace meat.
Bread (unsalted) - 3 slices
Commercial bread contains approximately 100 milligrams of sollium per
slice. Care must be taken to be certain that no salt has been included
in preparation of the bread used on this diet.
Bread may be omitted entirely and in its place 1/2 cup of unsalted cooked
macaroni, or unsalted cooked rice, or unsalted cooked farina may be used
in place of one slice of bread. Since the diet does not include milk or
cream, butter may be used with these foods.
