-5- it was because they wanted something from me. As I said before I am not clear about his position and I don't know what he wanted. I want to mention something else here that I think may be of some importance. I once made the remark to Leverkuhn after I had been interrogated by the Russians that I had a slightly unpleasant feeling about it because things were coming to the surface which would harm the matter itself and I told him that perhaps things like that could be talked about outside a formal interrogation and may be he could mention it to General Donovan so I could talk to Colonel Amen about it and may be that is how it came into being. Q. You mean something the Russians were bringing out in the interrogation with you that might not be helpful in the case? A. No, I just meant that in general you will probably remember, Colonel, I mean the other day when I was interrogated by the Russians I asked you if I was being interrogated as a defendant or as a TRUMAN witness and whether I was under oath to find out whether I was ARCHIVES AND LIBRARY RECORDS obliged to answer everything and whether I was supposed to give SERVICE them the full extent of my knowledge and they said no, that is not so, and I talked to Leverkuhn and I said I had some information that could be brought out outside of a formal interrogation because I didn't t think it would help to bring it out, and he said he would talk it over with General Donovan, SO I could speak to Colonel Amen. Q. I don't understand your reference to the conversation you had with me about the Russian interrogation. A. You remember when I asked, and it should be in the record, whether I was a defendant or a witness because I had not been taken under oath. I didn't put it quite clearly just now. You remember
