OF DEFENSE DEPAR ENSE Filed by OFFICE OF THE SECRETARY OF DEFENSE MR. DAWSON WASHINGTON 25, D. C. NOV 13 1952 UNITED STATES OF AMERICA NOV 2 HARRY 5. TROMAN NATIONAL AND LIBRARY U.S. Dear Mr. Flanagan: I have contacted the three branches of the service and I am pleased to advise you that the Department of Defense is agreeable to the declassification of the statistics concerning homosexuals which have been furnished to your Subcommittee with this limitation. The Department is not in a position to remove the classification from nor permit the publication of any reference to or indication of the strength of the Department. This would include of course any relationship of the figures to the strength of the Department by percentage or otherwise. I am sure you will understand the reason for this restriction at this time. I trust this information will be helpful and assure you of our desire to cooperate as far as possible with your Committee. Sincerely yours, SIGNED FELIX E. LARKIN General Counsel Mr. Francis D. Flanagan Chief Counsel Senate Investigations Subcommittee United States Senate cc: Mr. Stephen J. Spingarn Executive Office Building Room 230 The White House RECEIVED NOV 6 1950 STEPHEN J, SPINGARN
