- 16 - Both we and Russia have a fundamental job to do - the job of raising the living standards of our peoples, and of other peoples with whom our economic life is bound up. Russia wishes to do that job by one method, we by another. She is in a position to employ her methods in certain countries, we in others. We believe that our method will work better than hers, and we are willing to let the outcome be determined by the test of time. Everybody stands to gain by such competition for constructive ends, free from aggression. Patience must be our watchword. When the destiny of all mankind is at stake, we need to exercise all the patience we can muster within ourselves. is It is clear, then, that two avenues lie ahead of us. One leads to war, which would shake civilization to its very foundations, inflict agony on innocent millions, and blanket the earth in brutality. I have no doubt that we would be victorious in a military sense, but I believe that even in victory such a war would impose staggering problems and burdens upon us.
