Dear Governor Youngdahl:
We have corresponded with reference to the subject
of segregation in the National Guard. You are no doubt
familiar with the fact that the President issued an
Executive Order on July 26, 1948 providing for a Committee
to investigate and report on the broad subject of equality
of treatment and opportunity within the Armed Forces. A
copy of the Order is enclosed.
In the course of its investigation and study, the
Committee will, of course, consider the question of the
National Guard.
The question which you raised, together with other
questions, will come before the President's Committee and
I will defer definite action pending the Committee report
and the President's action thereon.
