IN REPLY REFER TO

Kozlowski, Stephen F.
22 August 1951
SN RA 11 177 975
Mrs. Kay Kozlowski
100 Hawthorne Street
Chelsea, Massachusetts
Dear Mrs. Kozlowski:
Reference is made to your telegram of 16 August 1951 furnishing instruc-
tions concerning the shipment of the remains of your son, the late Corporal
Stephen F. Kozlowski. In accordance with your wishes, the body will, upon
arrival in the United States, be reshipped to A. Zakcheski and Son, Funeral
Directors, 79 Broadway, Chelsea, Massachusetts.
No definite information is now available concerning the exact time when
the remains will arrive. After they are in the United States, military
authorities responsible for shipment to final destination will notify you
and the receiving funeral director by telegram of the date of shipment,
the rail routing, the scheduled time of arrival at final destination, and
the name of the escort who will accompany the body. The date and time of
the funeral should not be set, nor should relatives come from a distance to
attend until you are notified of the date of arrival of the remains at the
final destination.
All expenses in connection with preparation and shipment to the place des-
ignated will be borne from government funds. Existing regulations provide that
an allowance not to exceed $125.00 toward expenses incident to interment, which
are incurred at destination, may also be made if the remains are interred in a
private cemetery. This allowance goes to the person who pays the receiving
funeral director's bill, and proper forms on which to submit the claim will be
delivered by the escort.
The remains will be accompanied by a military escort from a United States
port to the destination designated by the next of kin. When burial is in a
private cemetery, the escort may, at the request of the next of kin, attend the
final interment services, provided such services are held within seventy-two
hours after his arrival at the point of delivery. The escort also will provide
the next of kin with an application for a government marker or headstone.
Sincerely yours,
JAMES B. CLEARWATER
