Harold Shullaw, BO\nCOPIES TO:\nThe Secretery\nTwo copies to R - Mr. Armstrong\nEUR - Mr. Hickerson\nAmerio an Embasey, Canberra\n1-1493\nSir Frederick Shedden, Australian Permanent Secretary of\nDefense, called on me at his request today. He was accompanied\nby Owen Davie, First Secretary of the Nustralion Embassy, who\nw1 thdrew after introductions had been performed. Sir Frederick\npresented letters of introduction from Prime Minister Chifley,\nMr. Robert Menzies, Leader of the Opposition, and Mr. Richard\nCasey. He remarked that these lettere demonstrated hie non-party\nstatue.\nBir Frederick said that in 1946 Prime Minister Chifley had\ndecided that Australia should assume a larger share of defense\nresponsibilities for the British Commonwealth in the Pacific area.\nHe mentioned that Australia's defense expenditures vere very\nlarge for a country of only 8 million people. He also referred\nto Australian participation in the joint U.K.-Australien rocket\nrange project in central Australia through a contribution of\nmoney and the provision of facilities,\n3ir Frederick said that\nit is planned to eventually transfer laboratory work now being\ndone in the United Kingãom to Australia, and toward this end\nAustralian scientiste have been receiving training in Britain.\nThis training project, he said, had run into 6 road block be-\ncause of the ban on classified information now in effect.\nDECLASSIFIED\nHe\nE.
