Memorandum of Telephone Conversation
in SERVICE RECORDS AND
Mr. Acheson called Mr. Early to alert through him the
Secretary of Defense on the vote which is coming up on the
Knowland resolution relative to the return of General MacArthur
and Admiral Badger for testimony before the Joint Armed
Services and Foreign Relations Committees of the Senate.
The Secretary referred to his conversation with Senator
Connally (reported separately) and told Mr. Early that he
felt it would be unfortunate if action were taken by these
Committees before they had heard the testimony from
Secretary Johnson, Mr. Acheson, or anyone else concerned.
Mr. Acheson pointed out that the vote on the motion to
delay the consideration of the resolution had been 13 to 7
to defer. He mentioned also the fact that it appeared the
vote on the resolution would be strictly along party lines,
with certain Democrats possibly switching over toethe
Republican side. Mr. Early said he would inform the
Secretary of Defense of the foregoing as soon as possible
and Mr. Acheson said that he felt the Secretary of Defense
and he and the President should consider this matter before
2 p.m. tomorrow.
